Engineering Electrode/Electrolyte Interphase Chemistry toward High-Rate and Long-Life Potassium Ion Full-Cell

Ying Mo et al.

Summary: Controlling the interfacial chemistries of potassium ion full-cells is crucial for better K(+) storage, however, the correlation between cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and their impact on electrochemical performance are poorly understood. In this study, an electrochemical modification strategy was used to tailor the CEI on a K2Fe[Fe(CN)(6)] (KFeHCF) surface and the SEI on a graphite (Gr) surface. The optimized matchup between CEI and SEI resulted in improved rate and cycling performance of KFeHCF/Gr full-cells, attributed to the presence of a robust, homogeneous, and conductive SEI containing stable PEO and K2CO3. These findings enhance our understanding of interfacial chemistry in K(+) storage and provide a rational design strategy for efficient and durable potassium ion full-cells, with potential application in other energy storage systems.

Prussian Blue Analogues with Optimized Crystal Plane Orientation and Low Crystal Defects toward 450 Wh kg-1 Alkali-Ion Batteries

Hang Zhang et al.

Summary: Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have high theoretical energy density and low cost, but their high water and vacancy content lower the energy density and pose safety issues. A potassium-ions assisted strategy is proposed to synthesize highly crystallized PBAs, which exhibit increased redox potential and high energy density of approximately 450 Wh kg(-1). In addition, unconventional highly-reversible phase evolution and redox-active pairs were identified for the first time, and the preferred guest-ion storage sites and migration mechanism were systematically analyzed through theoretical calculations.

Highly Crystalline Prussian Blue for Kinetics Enhanced Potassium Storage

Wenli Shu et al.

Summary: In this study, highly crystalline K2Fe[Fe(CN)(6)] (KFeHCF-E) as a cathode material for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) is synthesized by coprecipitation. The KFeHCF-E exhibits excellent rate capability and ultra-long lifespan in KIBs testing, with 61.3% capacity maintenance after 5000 cycles at 100 mA g(-1). The highest K+ migration rate is determined to be 10(-9) cm(2) s(-1) in the bulk phase. The robust lattice structure and reversible solid-phase K+ storage mechanism of KFeHCF-E are verified by in situ XRD. This work provides a simple crystallinity optimization method for developing high-performance cathode materials for advanced KIBs.

Formation of Mn-Ni Prussian Blue Analogue Spheres as a Superior Cathode Material for Potassium-Ion Batteries

An Li et al.

Summary: Potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate (KMHCF) is a promising cathode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its impressive electrochemical performance, abundant elements, and easy synthesis. However, the capacity fading and poor K+ diffusion kinetics hinder its large-scale application. In this study, Mn-Ni Prussian blue analogue (MnNi-PBA) spheres were synthesized using a facile anion exchange method. The addition of Ni stabilizes the structure and provides rich active sites, leading to improved cycling performance and shorter ion diffusion pathways. The MnNi-PBA sphere cathode exhibits high initial discharge capacity, enhanced rate capability, and long cycle life. The reversible structural changes (monoclinic <-> cubic) of MnNi-PBA spheres are observed during cycling. These findings provide a design strategy for Mn-based Prussian blue analogues in PIBs.
