SiO2 nanofiber composite gel polymer electrolyte by in-situ polymerization for stable Li metal batteries

Zhichuan Shen et al.

Summary: Superior SiO2 nanofiber composite gel polymer electrolytes (SNCGPEs) are developed for lithium metal batteries via in-situ ionic ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) monomers in SiO2 nanofiber membrane (PDOL-SiO2). PDOL-SiO2 exhibits high lithium ion transference number (tLi+) and ionic conductivity (Sigma) at 30 degrees C, with values of 0.80 and 1.68 x 10 -4 S/cm, respectively. The Li|PDOL-SiO2|Li cell shows a steady cycling performance for nearly 1400 h and the LFP|PDOL-SiO2|Li battery can steadily cycle with high capacity retention rates. The innovative strategy of designing PDOL molecular chains throughout the SiO2 nanofiber framework accelerates Li+ transportation, which is crucial for high-energy-density lithium metal batteries.

Solution-Processed Multiferroic Thin-Films with Large Magnetoelectric Coupling at Room-Temperature

Hamed Sharifi Dehsari et al.

Summary: Experimental realization of thin films with significant room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling coefficient α(ME) without an external DC magnetic field has been challenging. Here, large α(ME) of 750 +/- 30 mV Oe(-1) cm(-1) is achieved in multiferroic polymer nanocomposites (MPCs) thin films. The MPCs consist of PMMA-grafted cobalt-ferrite nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in piezoelectric polymer P(VDF-TrFE). Nanoparticle agglomeration is reduced by surface functionalization with PMMA, enabling the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles in submicrometer thin films. This research can promote the development of flexible and printable multiferroic electronic devices for sensing and memory applications.

Succinonitrile-Polymer Composite Electrolytes for Li-Ion Solid-State Batteries? The Influence of Polymer Additives on Thermomechanical and Electrochemical Properties

Vanessa van Laack et al.

Summary: A study investigated the influence of different polymers, such as PEO, PVP, PEC, and PAN, on the properties of a plastic crystalline electrolyte (PCE) consisting of LiTFSI in SN. The results showed that the chosen polymer affected the melting temperature, overall crystallinity, sublimation process, and mechanical strength of the PCE. The addition of PAN increased both the mechanical stability and ionic conductivity, making the PCE + PAN composition attractive for battery applications.

Ion conducting elastomer designed from thiourea-based dynamic covalent bonds with reprocessing capability

B. Kim et al.

Summary: Developing ion conducting elastomers (ICE) with reprocessing capability is important for resource conservation and environmental protection. However, elastomers with covalent cross-linking are challenging to reprocess due to their thermoset properties. To overcome this challenge, a thiourea-based dynamic covalent network was utilized to design the ICE. The analysis of the interaction between lithium salt and polymer chain led to the selection of LiTFSI. It was found that the dynamic covalent network's formation and behavior were influenced by the interaction between the polymer chain and lithium salts. The resulting dynamic covalent elastomer can be reprocessed through various methods and exhibits dimensional stability and ionic conductivity. (c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: A novel type of poly(ethylene oxide) based polymer in plastic crystal electrolyte was designed to achieve stable cathode/electrolyte and anode/electrolyte interfaces simultaneously through strong intermolecular interactions. The Li-Li symmetric cells with the polymer in plastic crystal electrolyte exhibited stable operation for 700 hours at 1 mA cm(-2) and delivered a high discharge capacity of 169 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention of 80% after 120 cycles, even at a high cut-off voltage of 4.4 V. This work highlights the development of PEO-based electrolytes with higher energy density through intermolecular design.
