Bulk and interfacial nanostructure and properties in deep eutectic solvents: Current perspectives and future directions

Saffron J. Bryant et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a tailorable class of solvents that are distinct from conventional solvents. They possess unique bulk liquid and interfacial nanostructures, and their physicochemical properties are dictated by structure-property relationships. However, there is still a significant gap in our understanding of the underlying factors that govern their solvent properties.

Samuel Cheeseman et al.

Summary: Liquid metals interact with cells, causing deformation and breakage of the metal surface. The flexible nature of the cells allows for multiple adhesion sites and the application of tensile forces on the metal surface. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that flexible biomolecules on the cell surface can disrupt the oxide layer on the metal surface.

Characterizing the Dynamic Disassembly/Reassembly Mechanisms of Encapsulin Protein Nanocages

India Boyton et al.

Summary: Encapsulins, self-assembling icosahedral protein nanocages derived from prokaryotes, show varying sensitivities to denaturant, extreme pH, and elevated temperature, and exhibit different reassembly capabilities after disassembly. While all three encapsulins were able to reassemble following GuHCl-induced disassembly, only the smallest T = 1 nanocage could reassemble after disassembly in basic pH. Atomic force microscopy revealed a significant loss of structural integrity in all encapsulins after sequential disassembly/reassembly steps. These findings provide insights into the dynamics of encapsulins' disassembly/reassembly, informing their future design, modification, and application.

Low-temperature liquid platinum catalyst

Md Arifur Rahim et al.

Summary: Understanding the interactions between metal and matrix in metal-matrix catalytic systems can enhance the catalytic activity of isolated metal atoms. In this study, it was found that a trace amount of platinum dissolved in liquid gallium can drive catalytic reactions with enhanced kinetics at low temperature. Molecular simulations showed that the platinum atoms remained unchanged in the gallium matrix and activated the surrounding gallium atoms for catalysis. The liquid catalyst system exhibited significantly higher activity compared to existing solid platinum catalysts, setting a foundation for future exploration of high-throughput catalysis.

Radiation shielding properties of gallium alloys

K. Sathish et al.

Summary: This study investigated the energy exposure buildup factors (EBF) and specific absorbed fraction (SAF) of energy for several gallium alloys, including Gallium alloy [Al-50%, Ga-50%], Galfenol [Fe-30%, Ga-70%], and Galinstan [Ga-68.5%, In-21.5%, Sn-10%]. The results showed that Galinstan had higher values of exposure buildup factors and specific absorbed fraction of energy compared to the other studied gallium alloys, indicating better absorption of X-rays and gamma radiation. This work is valuable for radiation shielding.
