Liquid Crystal Assembly for Ultra-dissymmetric Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Beyond

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is a phenomenon that can carry extensive optical information and provide an extra dimension of information compared to regular light. Chiral liquid crystal (LC) assemblies, known as cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), are highly ordered one-dimensional structures that can achieve molecule-scale chirality on a helical pitch. This makes LC assembly an ideal strategy for amplifying chirality and enabling ultra-dissymmetric CPL. This perspective discusses the generation, transmission, and modulation of CPL using chiral LC assembly, aiming to design and develop novel chiroptical materials. Recent applications of CPL-active LC microstructures in three-dimensional displays, circularly polarized lasers, and asymmetric catalysis are also highlighted.

Mechanistic Elucidation of the Hula-Twist Photoreaction in Hemithioindigo

Tobias Fischer et al.

Summary: The Hula-Twist (HT) photoreaction, which involves the motion of a double bond and an adjacent single bond, is a fundamental pathway for bond isomerizations. However, the fleeting nature of HT photoproducts has hindered direct experimental observation of this coupled motion. In this study, the Dube group designed a molecular framework using sterically crowded atropisomeric hemithioindigo (HTI) to stabilize the HT photoproducts and enable their direct observation. Furthermore, the researchers investigated the ultrafast excited state processes of the HT photoreaction, providing important insights into the mechanism of complex multibond rotations in the excited state.

Conformation-related excited-state charge transfer/separation of donor-π-acceptor chromophores

Jie Kong et al.

Summary: Understanding the charge transfer/separation processes in donor-pi-acceptor chromophores is important for improving the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this study, two newly synthesized molecules, CS-14 and CS-15, were investigated for their intramolecular charge transfer dynamics. The results showed that the CT/CS characters of the dyes were influenced by solvent polarity. CS-15 exhibited better planarization and slower charge recombination, leading to higher charge migration efficiency in DSSCs.

Direct Tracking Excited-State Intramolecular Charge Redistribution of Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Molecule by Means of Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the intramolecular charge delocalization/localization of a newly synthesized acceptor-donor-acceptor molecule was intensively investigated using femtosecond stimulated Raman scattering and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The nature of the relaxed S-1 state was found to be strongly influenced by solvent polarity, with symmetric delocalized intramolecular charge transfer characters occurring in apolar solvent and asymmetric localized ICT characters appearing in polar solvent due to solvation. The solvation dynamics extracted from fs-TA were consistent with the time constants obtained by FSRS, but FSRS clearly tracked the excited state intramolecular charge transfer delocalization/localization.
