Fully-printed metamaterial-type flexible wings with controllable flight characteristics

Igor Zhilyaev et al.

Summary: This study proposes the concept of artificial wings with a periodic pattern, inspired by metamaterials, and explores how the pattern geometry can be used to control the aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics of a wing. The results confirm the feasibility of metamaterial patterns to control the dynamics of flapping flight and can open new perspectives for applications of 3D-printed patterned wings.

Design optimization and wind tunnel investigation of a flapping system based on the flapping wing trajectories of a beetle's hindwings

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: The hovering flight action of a beetle species was studied to design a flapping-wing micro air vehicle (FWMAV). Various parameters were captured and a bioinspired wing and linkage mechanism flapping system were designed. Wind tunnel tests were conducted to optimize aerodynamic characteristics, paving the way for future development of beetle-mimicking FWMAVs.

Metabolic cost of flight and aerobic efficiency in the rose chafer, Protaetia cuprea (Cetoniinae)

Tomer Urca et al.

Summary: Rose chafer beetles are both pollinators and agricultural pests. Their flight efficiency is around 10.4%, with larger individuals having higher efficiency. The transition from a pollen diet to a fruit diet in the summer may affect their energy budget for foraging. The high cost of aerial locomotion explains their short flight bouts and prolonged feeding activity.

Insect wing 3D printing

Kazuya Saito et al.

Summary: Insects have evolved various types of wings, making them the most successful terrestrial animals. This study introduces a simple integral forming method for replicating the complex structure and functions of insect wings through 3D printing. The research focuses on artificial reproduction of insect wings' mechanical properties, including folding and coupling functions.

Toward the design of dynamically similar artificial insect wings

Heidi Reid et al.

Summary: Researchers aim to develop artificial insect wings with vibration spectra and mode shapes that are identical to real insect wings. Experimental modal analysis was used to characterize hawkmoth Manduca sexta wings, and artificial wings were created using additive manufacturing and heat molding. Despite differences in natural frequencies and gains between artificial and real wings, the vibration modes show similarities, laying the foundation for more advanced wing design in the future.
