Dynamic recrystallisation via nucleation at distorted twins in a Ni-based superalloy

B. Schulz et al.

Summary: Annealing twins of Sigma 3 character are common grain boundaries in fcc metals with low-to-medium stacking fault energy. Little is known about their evolution during hot deformation and their contribution to nucleation during dynamic recrystallization. This study developed an automated methodology to analyze distorted Sigma 3 twins in microstructures after hot compression tests. It was found that annealing twins lose their Sigma 3 character and facilitate discontinuous dynamic recrystallization. The importance of twin boundaries as nucleation sites for recrystallization was highlighted.

Influence of Storage Conditions on Powder Surface State and Hot Deformation Behavior of a Powder Metallurgy Nickel-Based Superalloy

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The chemical state of FGH96 superalloy powders remains unchanged after long-term storage, but the oxygen content and NiO/Ni(OH)(2) layer thickness increase in a short period of time and remain stable afterwards. Powders stored in an oxygen atmosphere have the highest oxygen content, while those stored in vacuum have the lowest. The oxygen content of the stored powders affects the workability of the HIPed parts obtained through isothermal compression.

Summary: Heat treatment is an important method to adjust the properties of additive manufacturing materials. This study focuses on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of a laser powder-bed-fused superalloy and reveals the formation of laminar carbide precipitates at grain boundaries. Air cooling during heat treatment can introduce grain-boundary precipitates, leading to decreased ductility, while water quenching eliminates these precipitates and improves ductility.

Summary: Grain boundary engineering is an important strategy for enhancing the properties of polycrystalline metals. This study investigates twin grain boundary segregation and its effects on deformation behavior in alloy 800H. The simulations reveal that solute atoms tend to segregate at incoherent grain boundaries at high temperatures, leading to the formation of Shockley partial dislocations and deformation twins. These findings provide insights into the yielding behavior of alloy 800H and the application of grain boundary engineering in producing high-performance polycrystalline metallic materials.

Microstructure evolution and dynamic recrystallisation behaviour in hot deformation of Haynes 214 superalloy

Jiaao Liu et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution and dynamic recrystallisation behavior of Haynes 214 superalloy were investigated under different deformation temperatures and strain rates. The results showed that temperature and strain rate have significant effects on the hot deformation behavior of Haynes 214 alloy. The fraction and grain size of dynamic recrystallisation increase with increasing deformation temperature. Fine and uniform dynamic recrystallisation grains are obtained at low and high strain rates, while the grain size and fraction decrease at a strain rate of 1 s(-1). Continuous and discontinuous dynamic recrystallisation occur during hot deformation and are influenced by strain rate and deformation temperature. The fraction of Sigma 3 (n) (n = 1, 2, 3) twin boundary increases with temperature and is higher at lower and higher strain rates, but lower at an intermediate strain rate of 1 s(-1).

Effects of heat treatment on corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion crack growth of additive-manufactured Alloy 800H in high-temperature water

Jingfan Yang et al.

Summary: The crack growth behavior of additively manufactured Alloy 800H in high-temperature water was studied, with a focus on the effects of heat treatment. It was observed that heat treatment had a mild impact on corrosion fatigue under cyclic loading, and the growth rate was comparable to wrought 800H. However, at lower load cycle frequencies, inconsistent stress corrosion cracking responses were observed in AM 800H compared to wrought 800H. Additionally, inhomogeneous crack propagation and localized pinning were attributed to carbides, microstructural inhomogeneity, and twin boundaries in stress-relieved and recrystallized AM 800H, leading to fast crack growth caused by grain boundary sensitization at around 10 wt% Cr.

Investigation into Microstructure Evolution of Co-Ni-Cr-W-Based Superalloy During Hot Deformation

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the deformation temperature and strain rate during hot compression tests have a significant impact on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) process. Decreasing deformation temperature leads to an increase in the fraction and grain size of DRX, as well as an increase in high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs). However, the fraction of DRX first decreases and then increases with increasing strain rates. In addition, both discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) are observed as nucleation mechanisms during the DRX process in Co-Ni-Cr-W-based superalloys.
