Investigation of correlation between the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of (CoCuFeNi)100-xAlx high entropy alloys

Jong Woo Choi et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of Al on the microstructure, phase, and mechanical properties of (CoCuFeNi)100-xAlx (x = 0 -20 at%) high entropy alloys (HEAs) was investigated. It was found that there was no significant change in microstructural morphology and mechanical properties from Al0 to Al15 HEAs. However, the appearance of the B2 phase in the inter-dendrite region resulted in distinct mechanical properties in Al15 to Al20 HEAs. Among them, Al18 HEA exhibited the most balanced mechanical properties due to the presence of (FCC+L12 +B2) and (B2 +FCC/L12) microstructures. Excessive Al content, on the other hand, led to the formation of primary B2 dendrites and a transition from ductile to brittle deformation mode. The phase and microstructure analysis was performed using multi-scale XRD, SEM, and TEM, and systematic deformation mechanical analysis was conducted on deformed and fractured specimens.

Ultra-high strength and excellent ductility high entropy alloy induced by nano-lamellar precipitates and ultrafine grain structure

A. X. Li et al.

Summary: We describe the development of a non-equiatomic CoCrFeNi2Al0.3Ti0.25 high entropy alloy (HEA) with high-density nano-lamellar precipitates and ultrafine grain structure. The HEA annealing at 700 degrees C (CR-700) exhibits ultra-high yield strength, ultimate tensile stress, and excellent total elongation, overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off. The ultra-high strength is mainly attributed to the synergistic strengthening effects of both nano-lamellar precipitates and ultrafine grains.

Twenty years of the CoCrFeNiMn high-entropy alloy: achieving exceptional mechanical properties through microstructure engineering

Hamed Shahmir et al.

Summary: The CoCrFeNiMn alloy, a multicomponent high-entropy alloy (HEA), has been extensively studied due to its exceptional properties and potential industrial applications. However, there is a challenge of achieving a balance between strength and ductility, which can be addressed by adding a sixth element or applying thermomechanical processing. This review focuses on the deformation mechanisms and microstructural evolutions of the alloy under different conditions, providing insights for its processing and manufacturing. Additionally, the behavior of the alloy under high temperature exposure and cyclic loading is discussed, highlighting the potential for future enhancement and optimization of this and other comparable HEAs.

L21-strengthened face-centered cubic high-entropy alloy with well pitting resistance

Liang Wei et al.

Summary: The effect of phase structure and composition on the passive film properties and pitting behavior of L21-strengthened (CoCrFeNi)86Al7Ti7 high-entropy alloy (HEA) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl was investigated. The results showed that the bilayer amorphous passive film enriched in Cr- and Fe-oxides/hydroxides on (Fe, Cr)-rich FCC phase and that enriched in Ti and Ni-oxides on (Ni, Al, Ti)-rich L21 phase both contributed to the well pitting resistance. The microgalvanic corrosion effect between FCC phase (cathode) and L21 phase (anode) broke the passive film on L21 phase at the two-phase interface and resulted in pitting nucleation.

Microstructural stability and properties of Al1.2CrCuFeNi2 dual-phase high entropy alloy

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructural stability and mechanical properties of a novel Al1.2CrCuFeNi2 dual-phase high entropy alloy were studied. The alloy exhibited a uniform near-eutectic structure composed of Ni-Al rich B2 matrix and Cr-Fe rich BCC spherical phases with an average grain size of about 100 nm. After annealing at 1000 degrees C, the alloy experienced precipitation of ultrafine particles and transformation from spherical to needle-like structure. The as-cast and annealed alloys demonstrated impressive combinations of yield strength, fracture strength, and plastic strain, and the hardness was also significantly improved after annealing, indicating excellent tempering softening resistance of the alloy.
