Understanding Tribocorrosion of Aluminum at the Crystal Level

Kaiwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a crystal-based tribocorrosion modeling framework was developed based on experimental and computational investigations of Al single crystals. The effects of lattice reorientation and dislocations on surface corrosion were taken into account. The experimental results showed that the tribocorrosion rate was independent of the initial crystal orientations. A multiphysics finite element model was developed and successfully predicted the depassivation and repassivation currents during tribocorrosion. The decrease of orientation-dependence during tribocorrosion was explained in terms of the coupling between un-rotated and rotated lattices.

Alloying effects in high temperature molten salt corrosion

Touraj Ghaznavi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dealloying phenomenon of Fe-(Cr)-Ni model alloys in molten chloride salts that simulate the heat-transfer circuits of molten salt nuclear reactors. Classical dealloying with porosity formation is observed as the dominant form of corrosion at low temperatures. Additionally, the increased surface diffusivity of the more-noble element, Ni, in molten chloride salts decreases the critical parting limit for dealloying.

The Effect of Temperature on Dealloying Mechanisms in Molten Salt Corrosion

Touraj Ghaznavi et al.

Summary: The mechanism of molten salt corrosion of Ni- and Fe-based model alloys at different temperatures relevant to molten salt nuclear reactors has been studied. It was found that Fe and Cr alloy elements separate in molten chloride salts, which depends on temperature. At lower temperatures, the corrosion mechanism is similar to aqueous systems, while at higher temperatures, grain boundary corrosion becomes prevalent and lattice diffusion plays an important role. When the temperature exceeds 600 degrees C, the crystal orientation of the corroded material is no longer the same as its parent grain, and the corrosion becomes more one-dimensional.

Multiphysics modeling and uncertainty quantification of tribocorrosion in aluminum alloys

Kaiwen Wang et al.

Summary: The research developed a finite element based multiphysics model to analyze the synergistic effects of mechanical and corrosion properties on tribocorrosion degradation mechanisms. Residual stress near the wear track edge led to concentrated corrosion current, causing non-uniform surface corrosion and stress-corrosion coupling which affected the tribocorrosion rate. Predictive tribocorrosion rate maps were generated based on material properties, showing that metals with specific properties are most resistant to tribocorrosion.

A comparative study on the critical pitting criteria of a super ferritic stainless steel at different temperatures in chloride or bromide solution

Longlin Lei et al.

Summary: The critical pitting criteria of S44660 in chloride or bromide solution were investigated. The study found that the more aggressive Cl- does not necessarily lead to lower Eb values in all temperature ranges. The Eb-T curves revealed that the pitting behavior can be divided into transpassivation, transition, and pitting regions with temperature. Further investigations showed that the wider transition region in bromide solution is due to the weakened repassivation ability caused by the interaction between Br- and Mo, indicating that pitting is more likely to occur at lower temperatures in bromide solution.

Emergence of micro-galvanic corrosion in plastically deformed austenitic stainless steels

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: Localized plastic deformation has been found to make nuclear reactor components more susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). By analyzing the surface reactivity and corrosion behavior of deformed stainless steel specimens, research has shown that regions with higher dislocation concentrations exhibit increased reactivity due to a reduction in corrosion activation energy. The combination of surface reactivity and strain distributions suggests that SCC cracking is likely to occur in areas with localized strain where micro-galvanic corrosion is favored.
