In-situ investigation of plasticity in a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy: Slip mechanisms, strain localization, and partitioning

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: The study focused on an in-situ mechanistic investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (alpha+beta) alloy, revealing a moderate partitioning trend between alpha- and beta-phases and prominent strain localization bands influenced by texture-facilitated prismatic a slip activation and near-ideal slip transfer conditions across the alpha/beta phase boundaries. Postmortem and in-situ damage analyses confirmed the significant role of these long-range strain localization bands in accelerating surface cracking events.

On the Localization of Plastic Strain in Microtextured Regions of Ti-6Al-4V

Jonathan Cappola et al.

Summary: The equiaxed microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V alloy contains alpha-phase grains of varying orientations. The presence of microtextured regions can adversely affect the mechanical properties of the alloy, particularly quasi-static and fatigue properties. Studies have shown that orientation spread within microtextured regions facilitates strain localization, and the intensity of microtexture in neighboring regions further influences the extent of strain localization.

Tailoring the deformation characteristics of commercial purity titanium through hot deformation of a martensitic microstructure

Qi Chao et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method was established to control the grain refinement, texture, and deformation anisotropy of commercial purity titanium through hot working of a martensitic starting microstructure. The unique deformation behavior obtained was mainly attributed to the microstructure and texture formed through the martensitic transformation, which altered the activation of slip systems, grain refinement kinetics, and texture development during hot deformation.

Deformation heterogeneity induced coarse grain refinement of the mixed-grain structure of 316LN steel through limited deformation condition

Yangqi Li et al.

Summary: By utilizing a two-stage method involving limited deformation followed by static recrystallization, it is possible to completely refine mixed-grain structures in heavy forgings. This method effectively takes advantage of the deformation heterogeneity, demonstrating that even with a low reduction rate, significant refinement can be achieved. This technique offers a promising approach for salvaging heavy structures in engineering applications.

Understanding the role of local texture variation on slip activity in a two-phase titanium alloy

D. Lunt et al.

Summary: By utilizing EBSD-based grain orientation mapping and high-resolution digital image correlation, the study investigated the shear strain mapping and Burgers vector direction analysis of two differently microtextured Ti-6Al-4V samples after small levels of plasticity. The results show that the dominance of a specific (a)over-right-arrow type slip mode varies significantly with local texture, and shear strain patterns can extend across many grains in the presence of soft macrozones.
