Influence of Oxidation on Structure, Performance, and Application of Metallic Glasses

Mao Zhang et al.

Summary: Metallic glasses are a novel class of structural and functional materials with unique structure and outstanding properties. However, frequent oxidation during preparation, processing, and application limits their potential industrial applications. Comprehensive understanding of the oxidation behaviors and mechanisms is essential for promoting engineering applications of metallic glasses.

Effect of composition and nanostructure on the mechanical properties and thermal stability of Zr100-xCux thin film metallic glasses

Andrea Brognara et al.

Summary: Thin film metallic glasses (TFMGs) are a novel class of materials with a combination of large plastic deformation in tension and superior yield strength. However, the relationship between atomic structure and mechanical properties has not yet been fully understood. This study investigates the mechanical properties and thermal stability of amorphous Zr100-xCux TFMGs with different nanostructures, and finds that composition and nanostructure play a significant role in determining hardness, plastic behavior, and fracture resistance.

In Situ Scattering Studies of Crystallization Kinetics in a Phase-Separated Zr-Cu-Fe-Al Bulk Metallic Glass

Sinan Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Zr-Cu-Fe-Al bulk metallic glass with excellent glass-forming ability exhibits a two-step crystallization behavior, with complex crystalline products. The strength and plasticity of the composite containing cubic Zr2Cu phase and glass matrix increase compared to the original as-cast glass. This research may contribute to the synthesis of high-strength and high-plasticity bulk-sized glass-nanocrystals composites.

Thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of hard nitrogen-alloyed Cr thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering

Camille Pallier et al.

Summary: Cr-N based materials are commonly used as hard and corrosion-resistant coatings. In this study, low nitrogen containing Cr thin films were deposited by high ion assisted magnetron sputtering. The films exhibited a multiphase nanostructure, resulting in a hardening effect. The mechanical properties of the films were affected by residual stress, h-Cr2N1-delta phase content, and nanostructuring.

Effect of structural heterogeneity on work-hardening behavior of metallic glass thin film

Xindi Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, atomic disordered Cu50Zr50 metallic glass thin films with different structural heterogeneities were prepared by controlling the substrate temperature. Work-hardening behavior was observed in the films and the thermal history was found to affect the viscoelasticity. The activation volume of heterogeneity was linked to the correlation length of viscoelastic heterogeneity, providing insights into the relationship between structural heterogeneity and work hardening behavior.

Thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of hard nitrogen-alloyed Cr thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering

Camille Pallier et al.

Summary: Low nitrogen containing Cr thin films deposited by high ion assisted magnetron sputtering were studied, revealing a hardening effect due to the multiphase nanostructure. The mechanical properties of these films depend on residual stress and nanostructuring nature, with a maximum hardness of 37 GPa achieved.

Al addition on the short and medium range order of CuZrAl metallic glasses

Chunyu Han et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of minor addition of Al in CuZrAl metallic glasses was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that Al atoms tend to act as centers of icosahedron, increasing the fraction of full ICO and facilitating the formation of Bergman medium range order, leading to higher glass forming ability of CuZrAl metallic glasses. The enhancement mechanism of Al addition on Bergman MRO is explained by its adhesive effect on icosahedral clusters.

Novel class of nanostructured metallic glass films with superior and tunable mechanical properties

M. Ghidelli et al.

Summary: A novel class of nanostructured Zr50Cu50 metallic glass films with superior and tunable mechanical properties has been produced by pulsed laser deposition. These films exhibit a unique nano-architecture characterized by dense self-assembled nano-laminated atomic arrangement alternating Cu-rich and Zr/O-rich nanolayers with different local chemical enrichment and amorphous or amorphous-crystalline composite nanostructure. These films show outstanding mechanical properties, including large hardness and elastic modulus, and excellent strength/ductility balance, which can be tuned by modifying the film architecture.
