Summary: This study aimed to determine whether differences in executive function (EF) and cognition precede weight gain or weight gain causes changes to EF and cognition. The results showed that variation in impulsivity, memory, learning, and processing speed was associated with greater increases in BMI trajectories, while weight gain was associated with a decrease in inhibitory control. However, 2 years of weight gain may not have clinical implications for EF and cognition beyond inhibitory control.

Summary: This study shows that low socioeconomic status in childhood is associated with deficits in executive function and changes in cortical morphology. Childhood obesity, which is more prevalent among low socioeconomic status children, is also associated with cortical alterations and impaired neurocognition. BMI plays a mediating role in the relationships between socioeconomic status, neurocognition, and brain morphology. These findings highlight the importance of considering BMI in future studies investigating the relationship between low socioeconomic status and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes.
