The Food4Years Ageing Network: Improving foods and diets as a strategy for supporting quality of life, independence and healthspan in older adults

Miriam E. E. Clegg et al.

Summary: By 2050, it is predicted that one in four people in the United Kingdom will be aged 65 years and over. Increases in lifespan are not always translated into years spent in good health. Incidence rates for chronic diseases are increasing, with treatments allowing people to live longer with their disease. There is good evidence to support changes to lifestyle to maintain or improve body composition, cognitive health, musculoskeletal health, immune function and vascular health in older adults. However, there are two major barriers: older adults are not meeting current UK recommendations for nutrients and the UK-specific recommendations may not be sufficient. More work is needed to improve food intake and nutrition in older adults, through various mechanisms. The Food4Years Ageing Network aims to develop healthy and affordable foods and diets for all older adults across the UK food landscape, improving their quality of life.

Fifty shades of grain-Increasing whole grain consumption through daily messages

Nina Weingarten et al.

Summary: Despite the health benefits of whole grains, most consumers, especially young adults, have low levels of whole grain consumption behavior. A two-week message intervention was conducted to increase whole grain consumption. The results showed that participants read the messages on most days and evaluated the health-only messages most positively. Health messages, but not recipe suggestions, significantly increased whole grain consumption one month after the intervention. This effect was mediated by attitudes and behavioral intentions. However, the effect size was small and consumption levels remained low.

A role for enjoyment for encouraging fruit consumption

Katherine M. Appleton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the value of emphasizing enjoyment for promoting fruit consumption. Study 1 visualized enjoyable, not enjoyable, and unassociated fruit to examine their effects on fruit consumption, while Study 2 used health promotion posters featuring enjoyable or less enjoyable fruit. Both studies employed independent-group designs and assessed various outcomes related to fruit consumption. The results revealed that higher intentions and more positive attitudes towards fruit were associated with greater likely enjoyment of visualized fruit, overall fruit liking, and fruit-related self-efficacy. Similarly, higher likely enjoyment of fruit featured on a poster predicted greater immediate fruit selection. These findings highlight the role of enjoyment in encouraging fruit consumption, emphasizing the value of enjoyment and the simplicity of using posters as an intervention.

Identifying behavioral and attitudinal barriers and drivers to promote consumption of pulses: A quantitative survey across five European countries

Katharina Henn et al.

Summary: Despite being nutritious and environmentally friendly, pulses are often considered old-fashioned. This study investigates consumer perceptions and aims to identify measures to increase consumer acceptance of pulses in Europe. Findings show cross-cultural differences in pulse consumption and drivers, highlighting the importance of considering cultural factors in promoting pulse consumption. Future product development and providing more information about the nutrition and cooking of pulses may enhance consumer acceptance.

Promoting Protein Intake in an Ageing Population: Product Design Implications for Protein Fortification

Victoria Norton et al.

Summary: Protein is an important nutrient for older adults, and their intake requirements increase with age. However, the current protein-fortified products in the market may not be suitable for older adults, and more attention should be given to their portion sizes, consumption habits, and preferences. Older adults need more awareness and education on the benefits of protein consumption, as well as products specifically designed to encourage their intake.

Individual variation in mouthfeel sensitivity: investigating influences of whey protein content, consumer age, food format and fat addition

Co-Creation and Co-Production of Health Promoting Activities Addressing Older People-A Scoping Review

Anne Seneca Terkelsen et al.

Summary: This scoping review examined the impact and influential factors of co-creative and co-productive health-promoting activities for older people aged 60+. The analysis of 18 articles from 2648 retrieved studies identified three main categories: social and physical activities, development of age-friendly environments, and discussions on healthy and active aging. Facilitating factors include planning and structure of the process and recognition of participants' time and resources, while recruitment of participants and their resources were major barriers.

Suggested explanations for the (in)effectiveness of nutrition information interventions among adults with a low socioeconomic status: a scoping review

Tim van Meurs et al.

Summary: Existing studies have explored explanations for the lower effectiveness of nutrition information interventions among adults with a low socioeconomic status, focusing on factors such as health literacy, economic resources, social resources, and convenience. However, empirical studies testing these explanations have yielded inconsistent results, leaving the reasons for the (in)effectiveness of NIIs among low-SES adults largely unclear. More diverse and systematic empirical studies are needed to improve the effectiveness of NIIs among low-SES populations.

Individual variation in mouthfeel sensitivity: investigating influences of whey protein content, consumer age, food format and fat addition

Victoria Norton et al.

Summary: Individual sensitivity to mouthdrying from whey protein varies with protein level and age, with older adults being more sensitive than younger adults. The mouthdrying detection threshold for whey protein beverages was established between 0.41% and 1.37% protein concentration. Increasing protein levels in beverages resulted in higher perception of mouthdrying and lower liking among consumers.

Summary: Studies have found that food variety has a significant small to medium effect on intake, with greater variety leading to increased consumption. However, high heterogeneity and risk of bias in studies demonstrate methodological limitations and emphasize the need for well-powered randomized controlled studies.

Summary: The study revealed that while older adults in Ireland generally receive sufficient macronutrients, they have high intakes of total fat, saturated fat, sugar, and salt, with low intakes of dietary fiber. Future strategies to address these nutritional issues could involve promoting healthy food choices and reformulating food supplies to support the successful aging of the population.
