Bioabsorbable WE43 Mg alloy wires modified by continuous plasma electrolytic oxidation for implant applications. Part II: Degradation and biological performance

Wahaaj Ali et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the corrosion, mechanical degradation, and biological performance of cold-drawn WE43 Mg wires. The results showed that the surface-modified Mg wires by continuous PEO had better corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. In contrast, the non-surface-treated Mg wires had a high corrosion rate, resulting in the loss of strength and ductility and no cell attachment. The PEO process formed a dense oxide layer that suppressed pitting corrosion and improved the strength of the Mg wires, enabling cell attachment.

Linking the effect of localised pitting corrosion with mechanical integrity of a rare earth magnesium alloy for implant use

Kerstin van Gaalen et al.

Summary: This study presents a computational framework that investigates the effect of localised surface-based corrosion on the mechanical performance of a magnesium-based alloy. Using a verified corrosion modelling approach, a quantitative relationship between mechanical integrity and corrosion features was established, with the minimal cross-sectional area parameter being the strongest predictor.

Combining peridynamic and finite element simulations to capture the corrosion of degradable bone implants and to predict their residual strength

Alexander Hermann et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a computational framework to describe the biodegradation of magnesium-based bone implants. It combines an electrochemical corrosion model and a mechanical model to assess the mass loss and residual mechanical strength of the implants. The framework utilizes an adaptive multi-grid discretization, non-local Dirichlet absorbing boundary conditions, and parameter calibration based on experimental data. It successfully captures the mass loss of typical alloys and can be used to predict the declining mechanical strength of bone screws subjected to biocorrosion over several weeks.

Automated ex-situ detection of pitting corrosion and its effect on the mechanical integrity of rare earth magnesium alloy - WE43

Kerstin van Gaalen et al.

Summary: This study develops an automated detection framework (PitScan) using Python-based algorithm to evaluate the severity and phenomenology of pitting corrosion. The framework analyzes microcomputer-tomography scans (mu CT) of corroded cylindrical specimens and identifies surface-based corrosion features, providing a spatial characterization of pitting parameters. The study also establishes relationships between key pitting parameters and mechanical performance in Rare Earth Magnesium alloy specimens. The results show that certain parameters described in ASTM G46-94 have little correlation with mechanical performance, while parameters directly linked to the reduction of cross-sectional area are more indicative of specimen's mechanical performance. The developed automated detection framework has the potential to standardize pitting corrosion measurements and predict mechanical strength degradation over time.

Exploring key ionic interactions for magnesium degradation in simulated body fluid ? A data-driven approach

Berit Zeller-Plumhoff et al.

Summary: The study examined the degradation of pure magnesium wire in simulated body fluid under physiological conditions and predicted the degradation rate based on the medium's ionic composition. A non-linear relationship was discovered between degradation rate and the precipitation of calcium salts, with a mean absolute error of 1.35 mm/yr in predicting the degradation rate. This relatively high value suggests that ionic interactions are complex or that an unknown parameter influencing degradation may be present.

Phase-field modeling of mechano-chemical-coupled stress-corrosion cracking

Chen Lin et al.

Summary: A new mechano-chemical coupling phase-field model is proposed to investigate stress-corrosion cracking, revealing the critical scenario of pit-to-crack transition and the exponential relationship between stress intensity factor and cracking velocity. The study provides important insights into the effect of variation in the electrochemical environment, mechanical loading, and initial geometry on promoting stress-corrosion cracking and assessing critical structures in corrosive environments.

Strength, corrosion resistance and cellular response of interfaces in bioresorbable poly-lactic acid/Mg fiber composites for orthopedic applications

Wahaaj Ali et al.

Summary: The study showed that immersion of poly-lactic acid/Mg fiber composites in simulated body fluid led to a decrease in interface shear strength, as a result of fast fiber corrosion and matrix cracking due to water diffusion. Cell culture tests revealed that early degradation of Mg fibers affected cell proliferation near the fibers. Surface modification of Mg fibers to delay degradation is crucial for further development of Mg/PLA composites for biomedical applications.

Summary: In this study, a new theoretical and numerical framework for modelling mechanically-assisted corrosion in elastic-plastic solids is presented. The model successfully captures pitting and stress corrosion cracking, as well as the pit-to-crack transition. For the first time, the role of mechanical straining as the electrochemical driving force is incorporated. The use of a phase field paradigm helps in accurately approximating complex SCC morphologies.

Research status of biodegradable metals designed for oral and maxillofacial applications: A review

Dandan Xia et al.

Summary: This review discusses the research status and future research directions of biodegradable metals (BMs) for oral and maxillofacial applications, focusing on Mg-based and Zn-based BMs for bone fracture fixation systems and guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes. Zn-based BMs with moderate degradation rate and superior mechanical properties show potential for clinical translation, while Fe-based BMs face limitations due to low degradation rate and insoluble degradation products. Proposed future research directions include 3D printed BM bone scaffolds, surface modification for BMs GBR membranes, and BMs containing hydrogels for cartilage, soft tissue, and nerve regeneration.
