Ultrasonography validation for early alteration of diaphragm echodensity and function in the mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Antonietta Mele et al.

Summary: The mdx mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy exhibits early diaphragm dysfunction, which can be effectively monitored through ultrasonography. This study demonstrates a significant decrease in diaphragm movement amplitude and an age-dependent increase in echodensity in mdx mice, indicating progressive loss of contractile tissue and fibrosis development. These findings support the utility of diaphragm ultrasonography as a powerful tool in preclinical drug studies to monitor disease progression and assess drug efficacy.

Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography for Evaluation of Diaphragm Stiffness in Patients with Stable COPD A Pilot Trial

Jing-Hong Xu et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle dysfunction is common in COPD, with respiratory failure being a common cause of death. This study investigated the use of ultrasound shear wave elastography (SWE) to measure diaphragmatic stiffness in COPD patients. The results showed that diaphragmatic shear wave velocity (SWV) was higher in COPD patients compared to healthy controls, and correlated with lung function and COPD assessment scores. Ultrasound SWE may be a useful tool for evaluating diaphragm stiffness in COPD patients.

QUANTIFYING LOWER LIMB MUSCLE STIFFNESS AS AMBULATION FUNCTION DECLINES IN DUCHENNE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY WITH ACOUSTIC RADIATION FORCE IMPULSE SHEAR WAVE ELASTOGRAPHY

Chia-Wei Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, ARFI/SWE technology was used to measure lower limb muscle stiffness in DMD patients and healthy controls. It was found that DMD patients had significantly increased lower limb muscle stiffness compared to controls. The stiffness of the rectus femoris muscle increased as ambulatory ability declined, while the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscle stiffness decreased.

Shear Wave Elastography, a New Tool for Diaphragmatic Qualitative Assessment A Translational Study

Yassir Aarab et al.

Summary: This study utilized ultrasound examination to investigate the relationship between diaphragm thickness and shear modulus in critically ill patients and mechanically ventilated piglets. The results showed that an increase in diaphragm thickness during critical illness is associated with decreased tissue stiffness, indicating muscle injury and weakness development.

Skeletal muscle phenotype signaling with ex vivo endurance-type dynamic contractions in rat muscle

Jesper E. Jakobsgaard et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that in an ex vivo dynamic muscle contraction model, the response of certain myocellular signaling proteins related to metabolic or synthesis events may be influenced by muscle phenotype, while the response of others seems to be independent of phenotype.

Shear Wave and Strain Elastography in Crohn's Disease-A Systematic Review

Anna Grazynska et al.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted on the use of sonoelastography in the diagnosis and assessment of Crohn's disease, revealing a small number of studies and significant methodological differences, emphasizing the need for further research to prove its feasibility. Standardized assessment criteria and cut-off points for strain elastography (SE) and shear wave elastography (SWE) should be established in the future.

Diaphragm echodensity in mechanically ventilated patients: a description of technique and outcomes

Benjamin Coiffard et al.

Summary: The study found that diaphragm echodensity increased in mechanically ventilated patients at the outset, and this increase in echodensity during the early course of mechanical ventilation was associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation. Moreover, both decreases and increases in diaphragm thickness were also associated with increased echodensity.
