Research on thermochemical erosion and thermal protection properties of multiple interface nozzles in long-time working hybrid rocket motors

Hui Tian et al.

Summary: In order to enhance the ablation resistance during long-time operation, a multiple interface nozzle with a carbon ceramic throat cap and a copper infiltrated tungsten throat insert is proposed. A transient numerical model is established to simulate the thermochemical erosion of the nozzle under hybrid rocket motor conditions, and a firing test is conducted to verify the simulation results. The erosion steps on the interface are explained, and the impact of these steps on ablation characteristics and thermal protection properties is studied through numerical simulations. The research findings provide valuable insights for the engineering application of hybrid rocket motors with multiple interface nozzles.

Numerical simulation of chemical ablation and mechanical erosion in hybrid rocket nozzle

Xiaotian Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the chemical ablation and mechanical erosion mechanisms of nozzle thermal protection materials in hybrid rocket nozzles through numerical simulation. The study finds that both chemical ablation and mechanical erosion have significant effects on the wall regression rate of the nozzle at specific locations, and that the thrust of the rocket engine decreases over time.

Numerical analysis of the hybrid rocket motor with axial injection based on oxidizer flow distribution

Hui Tian et al.

Summary: This paper studies the effects of liquid oxidizer flow distribution on combustion characteristics and performance of hybrid rocket motor with axial injection through numerical simulations. The results show that the oxidizer flow distribution mainly affects the flow field structure in the pre-combustion chamber and front part of fuel grain port, as well as the fuel regression rates and combustion efficiency. Therefore, the design of axial injector patterns should consider both the average combustion efficiency and the chamber head thermal protection.

Experimental investigation of a flow-oriented throttleable injector designed for throttleable hybrid rocket motor

Zeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Thrust throttling is an important advantage of hybrid rocket motors, and controlling injection conditions is crucial for achieving stable combustion and reducing upstream pressure. This study designed and tested a flow-oriented throttleable injector that can control injection pressure drop during thrust throttling. Cold flow tests and hot tests were conducted to verify feasibility and characteristics, showing that the flow-oriented throttleable injector significantly reduces injection pressure drop compared to conventional fixed structure injectors.

Effect of metal and metalloid solid-fuel additives on performance and nozzle ablation in a hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene based hybrid rocket motor

Hui Tian et al.

Summary: Metal and metalloid solid-fuel additives can significantly enhance the performance of hybrid rocket motors, but they also increase the ablation rate of the nozzle. This study investigates the impact of aluminum, boron, and aluminum hydride additives on the performance and nozzle ablation in a lab-scale hybrid rocket motor. The results show that aluminum has a superior regression rate improvement compared to aluminum hydride, while the combustion performance of boron as an additive is inferior to aluminum and aluminum hydride.
