The effects of microgravity on bone structure and function

Joey Man et al.

Summary: This review discusses the issue of bone loss in humans and animals exposed to microgravity in space. While space experiments are limited, ground research that simulates microgravity offers insights into the molecular mechanisms of bone loss and the development of more effective preventative and therapeutic measures. However, there are still knowledge gaps in understanding the exact mechanisms of microgravity-induced bone loss.

Developing, Implementing, and Applying Novel Techniques During Systematic Reviews of Primary Space Medicine Data

Andrew Winnard et al.

Summary: The Aerospace Medicine Systematic Review Group has developed specific methods for space medicine synthesis and trialed these methods in seven published reviews. The methods demonstrated usability and initial validity, showing the need for standardized guidance in synthesizing data in the unique field of space medicine research. The reviews identified research gaps and called for increased use of controlled trials and standardizing outcome measures.

Update on the effects of microgravity on the musculoskeletal system

Otto J. Juhl et al.

Summary: With the increasing interest in manned spaceflight and the commercialization of spaceflight, it is inevitable that humans will venture into space more frequently. However, exposure to microgravity during spaceflight can disrupt physiological systems, particularly the musculoskeletal system. Recent advancements have focused on understanding the catabolic effects of microgravity on bone and skeletal muscle cells, as well as exploring countermeasures to combat tissue loss. Research is continuously filling gaps in knowledge and identifying new avenues of study to support manned spaceflight endeavors.
