Dynamic semiconductor-electrolyte interface for sustainable solar water splitting over 600 hours under neutral conditions

Rui-Ting Gao et al.

Summary: Here we demonstrate a strategy to enhance the photoelectrochemical performance of the BiVO4 photoanode in neutral electrolyte by in situ forming a NiB layer through the addition of nickel and borate species. The NiB/BiVO4 photoanode shows a high photocurrent density of 6.0 mA cm-2 at 1.23 VRHE and a photostability over 600 hours. The addition of Ni2+ inhibits the dissolution of NiB and improves the charge transfer, while borate species act as a promoter for catalyst activity. The synergy effect of both species suppresses charge recombination and photocorrosion of BiVO4.

Metal-Organic Framework Glass Catalysts from Melting Glass-Forming Cobalt-Based Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework for Boosting Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Yurou Song et al.

Summary: Sluggish oxygen evolution kinetics and charge recombination hinder the progress of photoelectrochemical water splitting. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) catalysts show great potential in improving the performance of PEC water splitting. In this study, a MOF glass catalyst, Co-a(g)ZIF-62, was utilized on various metal oxide semiconductor substrates to construct integrated photoanodes, resulting in significantly enhanced water oxidation activity and stability. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that Co-a(g)ZIF-62 promotes charge transfer, improves carrier mobility, and accelerates the kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction, leading to improved PEC performance. This MOF glass not only acts as an excellent OER cocatalyst, but also offers promising opportunities for PEC devices in solar energy conversion.

Nanostructured Tantalum Nitride for Enhanced Solar Water Splitting

Yuriy Pihosh et al.

Summary: The development of high-performance solar-water-splitting technologies is limited by poor solar light absorption and charge separation. In this study, we overcome these challenges by developing photoanodes made from polycrystalline tantalum nitride nanorods (Ta3N5 NRs). Optimized morphology and crystalline properties of Ta3N5 NRs result in a significant increase in photocurrent for water oxidation activity. Factors such as charge carrier lifetime and diffusion length contribute to the enhanced performance. This research highlights the importance of designing narrow-energy band-gap photoanodes for efficient solar-water-splitting devices.

Subsurface Engineering Induced Fermi Level De-pinning in Metal Oxide Semiconductors for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is a promising approach for renewable solar light conversion, but surface Fermi level pinning severely restricts the PEC activities. Theoretical calculations suggest that subsurface oxygen vacancies could release the Fermi level pinning and maintain the active structure. A series of metal oxide semiconductors with subsurface oxygen vacancies were prepared and demonstrated to eliminate surface trap states and de-pin the Fermi level. Superior PEC performances were achieved on BiVO4, Bi2O3, and TiO2, surpassing most reported works under the same conditions.

Machine Learning Guided Dopant Selection for Metal Oxide-Based Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting: The Case Study of Fe2O3 and CuO

Zhiliang Wang et al.

Summary: By using a machine learning model, the authors successfully predicted the doping effect of metal dopants into hematite and identified critical parameters. The model was further validated experimentally and suggested that the chemical state, metal-oxygen bond formation enthalpy, and ionic radius are important factors for improving charge separation and transfer. The ML-guided selection criteria were also extended to copper oxide-based photoelectrodes, resulting in improved charge separation and transfer.
