Understanding Excess Li Storage beyond LiC6 in Reduced Dimensional Scale Graphene

Dong Won Kim et al.

Summary: The increase in capacity of porous graphene electrodes in Li storage devices is explained through morphological control and crystal structure transformation excluding functional groups. The synergy of edge effect and surface effect in reduced dimensional scale graphene in an open-porous structure significantly enhances capacity through multidimensional Li-ion accessibility and accumulation of Li atoms.

Graphene-substrate decoupling by S segregation. A LEEM/LEED study

Masahiko Suzuki et al.

Summary: The growth of graphene on Ni(110) is affected by sulfur coverage, leading to different growth modes compared to growth on a clean surface. Sulfur segregation reduces the interaction between graphene and Ni, resulting in the formation of multiple azimuthal orientations.

Assessing Reaction Mechanisms of Graphite Negative Electrodes Based on Operando Synchrotron Radiation Diffraction Data

Hiroyuki Fujimoto et al.

Summary: Since the commercialization of rechargeable Li ion batteries in the early 1990s, the performance of these devices has continually improved. The present work examined the reaction mechanisms at graphite negative electrodes based on operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction analyses during charge/discharge, showing a series of superlattices formed depending on the amount of Li intercalated into the graphite.

Charge/Discharge Reactions via LiPON/Multilayer-Graphene Interfaces without Li+ Desolvation/Solvation Processes

Munekazu Motoyama et al.

Summary: The Li+ desolvation process is seen as a limiting factor in lithium-ion batteries with a graphite anode, but it is absent in solid-state batteries. Thin-film all-solid-state cells using LiPON electrolyte and multilayer-graphene (MGr) film exhibit low charge transfer resistance at the LiPON/MGr interface, with the main overpotential coming from ohmic loss of LiPON rather than interface issues, allowing for a capacity retention of 60% even at 900C.

Non-equilibrium insertion of lithium ions into graphite

Na Li et al.

Summary: Graphite is considered the most important anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its 2D structure allowing for ionic intercalation. Through in situ transmission electron microscopy, the real-time intercalation process of Li ions was observed at the atomic scale, revealing the formation of wrinkles and cracks in graphite layers as Li ions accumulate. The non-equilibrium behavior of Li-ion migration into irreversible wrinkled structures can degrade the capacity of graphite-based energy-storage devices, especially at high charging rates.
