Nitrogen-Doped and Sulfonated Carbon Dots as a Multifunctional Additive to Realize Highly Reversible Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Tian-Bing Song et al.

Summary: By designing an eco-friendly nitrogen-doped and sulfonated carbon dots (NSCDs) as a multifunctional additive for cheap aqueous ZnSO4 electrolyte, the parasitic reactions, dendrites, and limited lifespan of ZIBs can be effectively overcome. The polar groups on NSCDs surfaces regulate the solvation structure of Zn2+ and adsorb on Zn anode surface to isolate H2O/SO42- corrosion. The synergistic effect of doped nitrogen species and surface sulfonic groups induces uniform electrolyte flux and homogeneous Zn plating, leading to excellent cycle life (4000 h) and Coulombic efficiency (99.5%) of optimized ZIBs in typical ZnSO4 electrolytes with only 0.1 mg mL(-1) of NSCDs additive.

Tuning the Li plus Solvation Structure by a Bulky Coordinating Strategy Enables Nonflammable Electrolyte for Ultrahigh Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a solvation tuning strategy by utilizing molecular steric effect to create a bulky coordinating structure in battery electrolyte design. The designed electrolyte generates an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI), leading to excellent compatibility with both Li metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes. Under an ultrahigh voltage of 4.6 V, Li/NMC811 full-cells (N/P = 2.0) hold an 84.1% capacity retention over 150 cycles and industrial Li/NMC811 pouch cells realize an energy density of 495 Wh kg-1. This study provides innovative insights into Li+ solvation tuning for electrolyte engineering and offers a promising path toward developing high-energy Li metal batteries.

Interfacial Issues and Modification of Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Li Metal Anode in Liquid and Solid Electrolytes

Oh B. Chae et al.

Summary: The next generation of lithium batteries requires high energy density, which can be achieved by shifting from conventional intercalation-based anode (such as graphite) to lithium metal anode. However, the highly reactive nature of Li metal and the hostless deposition and stripping reactions hinder its practical use as an anode. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a vital role in protecting the Li metal surface, but the SEI layers formed in different electrolyte systems have distinct properties, leading to different interfacial issues. This report compares the interfacial issues and provides different strategies for SEI modification to overcome these challenges.

The Anionic Chemistry in Regulating the Reductive Stability of Electrolytes for Lithium Metal Batteries

Nan Yao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of anionic chemistry in regulating the structure and stability of electrolytes through computational and experimental approaches. The research reveals that introducing anions into the Li+ solvation sheaths can enhance the reductive stability of solvents while decreasing the reductive stability of anions. Based on these findings, new strategies for building stable electrolytes are proposed. This work provides insights into the mysterious anionic chemistry and contributes to the rational design of advanced electrolytes for practical Li metal batteries.

Summary: In this study, an inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) was designed on the Li-metal surface in carbonate electrolytes to reduce the bonding energy with Li metal, enabling high Li plating/stripping efficiency and cycling performance. The weak bonding of the SEI to Li promotes Li diffusion and prevents Li dendrite penetration, resulting in a high Coulombic efficiency during cycling.
