Completely spin-decoupled geometric phase of a metasurface

Xinmin Fu et al.

Summary: Metasurfaces provide a powerful tool for manipulating electromagnetic waves, but the geometric phases they generate are usually spin-coupled. This study proposes a method to obtain spin-decoupled geometric phases by engineering the surface current paths on meta-atoms. Proof-of-principle prototypes were designed and measured, confirming the success of this approach.

Self-adaptive deep reinforcement learning for THz beamforming with silicon metasurfaces in 6G communications

Yi Ji Tan et al.

Summary: The exponential growth in data rate demands has led to the development of novel beam-forming techniques for massive MIMO systems in 6G terahertz wireless communications. In this study, we propose an intelligent and self-adaptive beamforming scheme enabled by deep reinforcement learning, which can predict the required spatial phase profiles in real-time. Our experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this approach for two-dimensional beamforming using silicon metasurfaces.

Generation of Airy beams in Smith-Purcell radiation

Liqiao Jing et al.

Summary: The study proposes a method to generate Airy beams by using bianisotropic metasurfaces interacting with moving electrons. By adjusting the coupling strength, full amplitude coverage and phase switching of Smith-Purcell radiation can be achieved, which shifts the wave front of the assembled Airy beam towards a parabolic trajectory. Experimental results demonstrate that evanescent fields bound in slotted waveguides can be coupled into Airy beams through Smith-Purcell radiation from designed bianisotropic metasurfaces. This method and design strategy offer an alternative route towards free-electron lasers with diffraction-free, self-accelerating, and self-healing beam properties.

Tonghao Liu et al.

Summary: Amplitude-phase control for circular polarized (CP) waves is a hot research topic in electromagnetics due to their promising applications. This paper proposes an innovative strategy of single-layer achiral metasurfaces to independently manipulate the amplitude and phase of orthogonal CP waves, and verifies the feasibility through the design of a meta-hologram.

High-efficiency generation of far-field spin-polarized wavefronts via designer surface wave metasurfaces

Weikang Pan et al.

Summary: A new strategy is proposed to efficiently generate arbitrary spin-polarized scattering far-field patterns from surface-wave (SW) excitations on a designer Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) metasurface. PB meta-atoms serve as subwavelength scatter to decouple impinging SW to spin-polarized propagating waves (PW), and interference among PWs generated by scatterings at different PB meta-atoms can generate tailored far-field patterns. Designed PB metasurfaces in the microwave regime can generate desired radiation patterns within a broad frequency band, including unidirectional radiation, line/point focusing, vortex beam, and hologram.

Polarization Shaping of Free-Electron Radiation by Gradient Bianisotropic Metasurfaces

Liqiao Jing et al.

Summary: Free-electron radiation phenomena have great potential in creating light emission with highly tunable spectra, covering a wide range of frequencies from microwave to X-ray. These phenomena can be applied in various fields such as on-chip light sources, particle accelerators, and medical imaging. Anomalous free-electron radiation has been demonstrated at the microwave regime from gradient bianisotropic metasurfaces, utilizing new degrees of freedom in polarization shaping beyond the common spectral and angular shaping.

Chirality-Assisted Aharonov-Anandan Geometric-Phase Metasurfaces for Spin-Decoupled Phase Modulation

Ruonan Ji et al.

Summary: In this work, a phase modulation strategy based on chiral structure was proposed, allowing for control of the evolution of the Aharonov-Anandan geometric phase by tuning structural parameters independently. Umbrella-shaped metal-insulator-metal structures and metasurfaces were designed to generate broadband orbital angular momentums and spin-switchable holograms. The strategy achieved broadband spin-dependent phase modulation while minimizing dispersive effects.
