UV-Vis-NIR Light-deformable Shape-memory Polyurethane Doped with Liquid-crystal Mixture and GO towards Biomimetic Applications

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study designed a UV-Vis-NIR light-deformable SMP composite film by incorporating a liquid crystal mixture and graphene oxide into a shape-memory polyurethane matrix. The elongated composite films exhibited interesting photomechanical bending deformations with different light-triggered mechanisms. The biomimetic circadian rhythms of acacia leaves and the biomimetic bending/spreading of fingers were successfully achieved.

Effects of graphene nanoplatelets on bio-based shape memory polymers from benzoxazine/epoxy copolymers actuated by near-infrared light

Surapong Srisaard et al.

Summary: Incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets as photothermal fillers significantly improved the photothermal, thermal, and dynamic mechanical properties of the bio-based benzoxazine/epoxy copolymers. The addition of 3 wt% GNPs resulted in the highest shape memory performance with shape fixity of 92% and shape recovery of 99%, demonstrating excellent shape memory properties. Additionally, the V-fa/ECO copolymers filled with GNPs showed good execution in repeated fold-deploy tests, with shape fixity and shape recovery values close to the original specimen.

Photo-responsive shape memory polymer composites enabled by doping with biomass-derived carbon nanomaterials

Nina Yan et al.

Summary: A novel light-triggered shape memory composite was reported by incorporating renewable biomass-derived carbon nanomaterials into acrylate polymers, without the need for deep purification. The functionalized carbon nanomaterials not only had stable dispersion in polymers, but also enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites by forming hydrogen bonds between the carbon nanomaterials and the polymers. Additionally, the composites exhibited excellent and stable thermal and photothermal responsive properties, making them promising candidates for shape memory applications in smart fabrics and intelligent soft robotics.

Improving the mechanical properties of polycaprolactone using functionalized nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose with high dispersibility and long fiber length as a reinforcement material

Hamidah Binti Hashim et al.

Summary: In this study, polycaprolactone (PCL)-grafted HP-NFBC nanocomposites were prepared via ring-opening polymerization, and their mechanical properties were investigated. The results suggest that HP-NFBC can serve as an excellent reinforcement material for improving the ultimate strength and Young's modulus of the nanocomposites.

Triple and Two-Way Reversible Shape Memory Polymer Networks with Body Temperature and Water Responsiveness

Ruixue Liang et al.

Summary: Through thiol-ene chemistry, shape memory polymers (SMPs) based on hydrophobic polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF) and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) oligomers were successfully fabricated, showing a body temperature-triggered two-way shape memory effect and a body temperature- and water-triggered one-way triple shape memory effect. These features make the polymers promising for biomedical applications, as demonstrated by their application as a new type of esophageal stent with adjustable and self-expandable properties, as well as the ability to release drugs.
