Rapid Biodegradation of the Organophosphorus Insecticide Acephate by a Novel Strain Burkholderia sp. A11 and Its Impact on the Structure of the Indigenous Microbial Community

Xiaozhen Wu et al.

Summary: Burkholderia sp. A11 was found to efficiently degrade acephate, with a degradation efficiency of 83.36% within 56 hours. The A11 strain exhibited broad substrate tolerance and effectively degraded acephate in the concentration range of 10-1600 mg/L. Six metabolites were identified during the degradation process, with methamidophos, acetamide, acetic acid, methanethiol, and dimethyl disulfide being the main products. The degradation pathways involved amide bond breaking and phosphate bond hydrolysis. Furthermore, strain A11 successfully colonized different soils and substantially accelerated acephate degradation, degrading over 90% of acephate (50-200 mg/kg) within 120 hours. 16S rDNA sequencing confirmed that strain A11 gradually became the dominant species in the soil microbial communities, causing slight changes in diversity and composition.
