Biodegradable and Cytocompatible Hydrogel Coating with Antibacterial Activity for the Prevention of Implant-Associated Infection

Yanhui Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an antibiotics-free strategy to address implant-associated infection (IAI) challenges by using a biodegradable and cytocompatible hydrogel coating. The developed GelMA-octylQAS hydrogel exhibits good mechanical properties, biodegradability, excellent bactericidal activity against various types of bacteria, and high cytocompatibility. When coated onto the implant, it demonstrates superior antimicrobial ability in the infective model of femoral fracture of rats. The GelMA-octylQAS hydrogel might provide a promising platform for preventing and treating IAI.

Porous Antimicrobial Coatings for Killing Microbes within Minutes

Saeed Behzadinasab et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial coatings can effectively reduce the spread of infectious agents. Fast killing can be achieved by using a porous coating that allows the contaminated liquid to penetrate into the pores and come into rapid contact with active material. The use of a porous scaffold combined with an antimicrobial coating has shown significant improvement in the inactivation of microorganisms compared to a non-porous coating. This study demonstrates the importance of porous antimicrobial coatings in preventing the transmission of infectious agents.

Transparent Anti-SARS-CoV-2 and Antibacterial Silver Oxide Coatings

Mohsen Hosseini et al.

Summary: Transparent antimicrobial coatings can reduce disease transmission while maintaining surface aesthetics and functionality. Researchers fabricated a coating with silver oxide particles, which showed a significant reduction in SARS-CoV-2 and other common bacteria. These transparent antimicrobial coatings are expected to be widely used on communal touch-screens.

pH-Switchable Antimicrobial Supramolecular Hydrogels for Synergistically Eliminating Biofilm and Promoting Wound Healing

Huimin Chen et al.

Summary: This study develops pH-switchable antibacterial hydrogels based on self-assembled amphiphilic pentapeptides, which can eradicate biofilms and promote healing in infected wounds. In vitro experiments demonstrate that the hydrogels achieve antimicrobial effects through the release of pentapeptides and antibacterial oil. In vivo experiments show that the hydrogels can accelerate wound closure, reduce inflammation, and promote angiogenesis and collagen deposition.

Physical, Electrochemical, and Solvent Permeation Properties of Amphiphilic Conetwork Membranes Formed through Interlinking of Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-Graft-Poly[(2-dimethylamino)ethyl Methacrylate] with Telechelic Poly(ethylene glycol) and Small Molecular Weight Cross-Linkers

Anuradha et al.

Summary: In this study, dense and porous amphiphilic conetwork (APCN) membranes were prepared through the covalent interconnection of different copolymers. The properties of dense APCN membranes can be varied by controlling the compositions and overall crystallinity. The dense APCN membranes interconnected with reactive PEG show good transport properties, while the mechanical blend membranes with nonreactive PEG do not perform well. Additionally, APCN ultrafiltration membranes exhibit excellent solvent resistance and separation performance.
