Ionic conductivity prediction model for composite electrodes and quantification of ionic conductivity reduction factors in sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries br

Kazufumi Otani et al.

Summary: In recent years, all-solid-state batteries have been considered as suitable candidates for application in electric vehicles due to their safety, rapid recharging, and energy density. However, the ionic conductivity of these batteries decreases significantly when the electrodes are composed of a composite containing active materials. This paper clarifies the reason for this decrease in conductivity both experimentally and via simulations, and proposes a prediction model for the ionic conductivity of composite electrodes.

Microscopic Degradation Mechanism of Argyrodite-Type Sulfide at the Solid Electrolyte-Cathode Interface

Yusuke Morino et al.

Summary: Interfacial engineering of sulfide-based solid electrolyte/lithium transition-metal oxide active materials in all-solid-state battery cathodes is essential for optimizing cell performance. Surface coating with a buffer layer, such as LiNbO3, is a typical method, but it may not be sufficient for harsh environments. This study investigates the interfacial degradation mechanism in half cells using Li6PS5Cl/LiNbO3-coated LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode mixture. The results suggest that the degradation of the interfacial solid electrolyte region strongly impacts cell performance.

Degradation of an argyrodite-type sulfide solid electrolyte by a trace of water: A spectroscopic analysis

Yusuke Morino et al.

Summary: Sulfide-based solid electrolytes are promising for solid-state lithium batteries due to their high ionic conductivities, suitable mechanical properties, and wide electrochemical windows. However, the hygroscopic nature of sulfide in these materials leads to the generation of toxic H2S gas upon reacting with water, which reduces the lithium-ion conductivity. On the other hand, it has been observed that conducting performance can be partially recovered through suitable heat treatment. This study employed multiple spectroscopic analyses to investigate the degradation and recovery mechanisms of a sulfide solid electrolyte under moisture exposure and vacuum heat treatment.

Degradation Analysis by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy for LiNbO3 Coating of Sulfide-Based All-Solid-State Battery Cathode

Yusuke Morino et al.

Summary: The surface coating of cathode active material in all-solid-state batteries using sulfide-based solid electrolytes is a fundamental technology. LiNbO3 is one of the most representative materials used for this purpose. Analyzing the performance degradation of half cells exposed to harsh conditions, it was observed that the Nb element from the LiNbO3 coating remained at the interface, while the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) spectra indicated a decomposition reaction of the LiNbO3 coating, leading to oxidization deterioration of the sulfide electrolyte at the interface.

Hikaru Sano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degeneration mechanism of an argyrodite-type sulfide-based solid electrolyte under low-humid conditions. The results indicate that the electrolyte can degrade even under super-low humidity, and the grain surface degeneration leads to a decrease in lithium-ion conductivity at the grain boundary. The degenerated electrolyte surface can be partially recovered by heating, although some small-scale degeneration may occur during the heating process.

Deterioration process of argyrodite solid electrolytes during exposure to humidity-controlled air

Hirofumi Tsukasaki et al.

Summary: Sulfide-based solid electrolytes (SEs), with high ionic conductivity, are promising candidates for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, their conductivity decreases and toxic gas is generated when exposed to air. This study investigated the degradation process of argyrodite, a promising SE, primarily through transmission electron microscope observation, and found that the decrease in crystallinity and the generation of decomposed components contribute to the deterioration.
