Abundant tannic acid modified gelatin/sodium alginate biocomposite hydrogels with high toughness, antifreezing, antioxidant and antibacterial properties

Xiumei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a protective film strategy was used to successfully construct a G-based hydrogel system with abundant TA as hydrogen bonds provider. The hydrogel system was first protected by a film formed from the chelation of SA and Ca2+, and then TA and Ca2+ were introduced using an immersion method. This strategy effectively protected the hydrogel structure and improved its mechanical and antioxidant properties. Cell experiments demonstrated that the G/SA-TA/Ca2+ hydrogels had good biocompatibility and promoted cell migration. Therefore, these hydrogels have potential applications in biomedical engineering, and the proposed strategy offers a new approach to enhance the properties of other protein-based hydrogels.

Flocculation of quartz by a dual polymer system containing tannic acid and poly(ethylene oxide): Effect of polymer chemistry and hydrodynamic conditions

Daowei Wang et al.

Summary: The flocculation behaviors of quartz using a dual polymer system containing tannic acid (TAN) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) were studied. It was found that the addition of tannic acid significantly enhanced the flocculation efficiency of PEO for quartz. The optimal ratio of tannic acid to PEO was observed to be 2, resulting in the best flocculation of quartz. Tannic acid also increased the strength and shear resistance of the flocs formed by PEO. Additionally, the dual polymer system enabled the re-flocculation of quartz under cycled shear conditions.

Converse two-way shape memory effect through a dynamic covalent network design

Guancong Chen et al.

Summary: The recently emerged thermally driven two-way shape memory effect has expanded the capabilities and potential of shape memory polymers. This study describes a molecular mechanism to achieve an opposite behavior in a two-way shape memory polymer (2W-SMP). By incorporating two types of segments in the network and using dynamic bond exchange, stress relaxation and elastic recovery are achieved, resulting in a change in the actuation direction of the polymer. This unique mechanism can be applied to fabricate smart materials like high-temperature warnings.
