Rigid-tough Coupling of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase Towards Long-Life Lithium Metal Batteries

Hantao Xu et al.

Summary: A novel functional quasi-solid-state polymer electrolyte is developed to address the failure of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in lithium metal batteries. This electrolyte is formed by in situ copolymerization of a cyclic carbonate-containing acrylate and a urea-based acrylate monomer in a commercial available electrolyte. The design of this electrolyte stabilizes SEI, achieving uniform lithium deposition behaviors and non-dendrite growth, and promoting the cycling performance of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li metal batteries.

Insights Into the Interfacial Degradation of High-Voltage All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Jiawen Li et al.

Summary: Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is a promising electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), but its poor interfacial stability with high-voltage cathode materials limits its application. This study improves the performance and investigates the failure mechanism of PEO-based ASSLBs by coating a high-voltage stable Li3AlF6 protective layer on the surface of LiCoO2 particles. It is found that LiCoO2 undergoes a chemical redox reaction with PEO-based SPE, leading to structure collapse, while Li3AlF6-coated LiCoO2 retains its original structure. At high charging voltage, there is electrochemical decomposition of PEO-based SPE, causing performance degradation.

A polymer electrolyte with a thermally induced interfacial ion-blocking function enables safety-enhanced lithium metal batteries

Huanrui Zhang et al.

Summary: Lithium metal batteries are considered one of the most promising energy storage systems due to their high capacity and low potential. However, safety issues caused by lithium dendrite growth and pulverization have limited their practical application. To address this, researchers have developed an in situ polymer electrolyte with thermally induced interfacial ion-blocking ability, resulting in improved safety and cyclability of lithium metal batteries.

A Growing Appreciation for the Role of LiF in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Jian Tan et al.

Summary: Rechargeable lithium batteries have transformed energy storage technology, but their further commercialization is hindered by short lifetime and safety issues, mainly due to the unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth. Research on SEI worldwide has focused on its debated structure and composition, particularly the role of the main component LiF. This review covers the development history of the SEI model, fundamental understanding of SEI, categorization of anode materials generating LiF in SEI, characterization techniques of SEI layers, transport mechanism of Li+ ions within SEI, physical properties of LiF, and analysis of LiF sources, offering insights for future research directions to promote large-scale applications of lithium metal batteries.
