Ascorbic Acid Enhances the Metabolic Activity, Growth and Collagen Production of Human Dermal Fibroblasts Growing in Three-dimensional (3D) Culture

Serkan Dikici

Summary: Tissue engineering aims to develop functional synthetic substitutes to replace damaged tissues and organs. Naturally sourced biomaterials are highly biocompatible but lack mechanical tunability, while synthetic ones offer versatility but limit biomaterial-cell interaction. In this study, the impact of AA2P on human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) growing on a PCL scaffold was assessed. Results showed that AA2P enhanced cell growth, metabolic activity, and collagen deposition. AA2P has potential as a growth medium supplement for culturing human cells on synthetic biomaterials in tissue engineering applications.

Thiolene- and Polycaprolactone Methacrylate-Based Polymerized High Internal Phase Emulsion (PolyHIPE) Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering

Betul Aldemir Dikici et al.

Summary: Highly porous emulsion templated polymers (PolyHIPEs) offer advantages in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine scaffolds by providing porosity for cell ingrowth and nutrient diffusion. This study demonstrates the fabrication of biodegradable PolyHIPE materials using thiol-ene chemistry, and shows their biocompatibility and ability to support cell attachment and viability.

Summary: Emulsion templating is a method for producing highly porous and interconnected polymer foams. This study introduces a system using submicrometer polymer particles to stabilize emulsions, resulting in highly interconnected large pore structures. This production method offers an interesting alternative for applications that require large pore structures.

Synergistic effect of type and concentration of surfactant and diluting solvent on the morphology of emulsion templated matrices developed as tissue engineering scaffolds

Betul Aldemir Dikici et al.

Summary: The importance of emulsion templating in the fabrication of tissue engineering scaffolds is investigated in this study. Results show that the diluting solvent type has a significant impact on the efficiency of surfactants and the morphology of polymerised emulsions. By tuning the solvent and surfactant type and concentration, control over the overall morphology of polymerised emulsions can be achieved for specific tissue engineering applications.
