Investigation on puncture mechanical performance of tracheal tissue

Yu Dong Bao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical behavior of the contact between an oblique tip puncture needle and tracheal tissue, establishing a theoretical model and conducting biomechanical simulations and realistic experiments. The study found that the puncture needle experienced cutting force, clamping force, and frictional force, with minimal force when the needle diameter was 22G and penetrating the tracheal tissue vertically. The error between experimental and theoretical values of puncture force did not exceed 10%, verifying the feasibility of the theoretical model and providing a theoretical basis for surgical instrument intervention.

Controlling toughness of polymer-grafted nanoparticle composites for impact mitigation

Shawn H. Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a new paradigm for controlling toughness at high deformation rates in a polymer-grafted nanoparticle composite system is demonstrated, where toughness peaks right before reaching full entanglement, a phenomenon that cannot be explained solely by the entanglement concept. The coupling of segmental dynamics with the entanglement concept enhances toughness at high deformation rates, providing novel insights for the design of composite materials.

Biomechanical fracture mechanics of composite layered skin-like materials

Christopher H. Maiorana et al.

Summary: Most protective biological tissues consist of a stiff and thin outer layer on top of a soft underlying substrate. This study explores the puncture mechanics of composite hyperelastic elastomers with different layer thicknesses. The results show that a stiff outer layer comprising only 1% of the composite thickness can achieve a similar puncture energy to a layer approximately 20 times thicker. The puncture energy reaches a local maximum when the top layer is approximately 1% of the total membrane. The study also reveals a new type of fracture, known as "coring," at large indentation depths.

Geometrical scaling law for laser-induced micro-projectile impact testing

Z. P. Gu et al.

Summary: This paper obtains a geometrical scaling law of launch velocity for Laser-induced micro-projectile impact testing (LIPIT) with relative thick metallic film using dimensional analysis, experimental measurements, and numerical simulations. The numerical simulation models of the LIPIT are established and validated by experimental results, providing a numerical validation for the geometrical scaling laws. The dimensionless formulas for predicting the launch velocities of micro-projectiles in a LIPIT are given, providing an effective method for analyzing and optimizing the LIPIT experiments.

Scaling for the inverse thickness dependence of specific penetration energy in polymer thin film impact tests

Yuwen Zhu et al.

Summary: Polymer thin films are widely used in various applications where impact performance is crucial. Recent studies on nanoscale polymeric films suggest that thinner films have higher impact resistance due to their specific penetration energy scaling inversely with film thickness. By employing coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, this study provides an explanation for this counterintuitive observation and presents the influence of film thickness on impact resistance, including penetration energy, stress wave propagation, and energy absorption processes.

Experimental study on the tension and puncture behavior of spray polyurea at high strain rates

Jian Cui et al.

Summary: Polyurea is a strain rate sensitive material, with its mechanical properties significantly affected by the loading rates. Under tensile and puncture loads, the yield force and strength of polyurea increase with loading rates, while the fracture strain decreases. The strain rate effect on the polyurea's failure deformation is only observed when the loading rate is less than 2 m/s.
