Broadband Spintronic Terahertz Source with Peak Electric Fields Exceeding 1.5 MV/cm

R. Rouzegar et al.

Summary: In this work, we significantly enhance the performance of an optically pumped spintronic terahertz emitter (STE) by optimizing the photonic and thermal environment. The terahertz pulses generated using high-energy pump pulses exhibit high electric fields and fluences comparable to those of a state-of-the-art terahertz source based on optical rectification. The optimized STE design retains the advantages of the standard design, but without the power loss associated with LiNbO3 setups, making it a promising tool for nonlinear terahertz spectroscopy. The emitted terahertz pulse using low-energy laser pulses shows a 2-fold improvement in electric field and covers a wider spectrum.

Modeling spintronic terahertz emitters as a function of spin generation and diffusion geometry

Yingshu Yang et al.

Summary: Spintronic THz emitters (STE) are efficient THz sources constructed using thin heavy-metal (HM) and ferromagnetic-metal (FM) layers. Different structuring methods have been experimentally applied to improve the performance of STE. Understanding the pathways for further research developments requires a theoretical description of the THz emission process, considering factors such as geometry, composition, pump laser frequency, and spin diffusion.

Different spin relaxation properties observed in linearly and circularly polarized laser induced terahertz emission from a Bi/Co bilayer

Kazuaki Ishibashi et al.

Summary: A recent study reported a helicity-dependent photocurrent in Bi single-layer thin films. This photocurrent is believed to originate from the combination of photon-spin conversion and spin-charge conversion effects in Bi, with a high efficiency of spin conversion expected in Bi. In this study, two types of terahertz (THz) emissions from Bi/Co bilayer films were measured to investigate spin current induced by laser induced demagnetization of the Co layer and photon-spin conversion effect in the Bi layer simultaneously. The observed different thickness dependences of peak intensity and bandwidth for THz spin current in the two experiments are attributed to the distinct spin relaxation properties of optically excited spin currents in Bi layers.

Spintronic terahertz emitters exploiting uniaxial magnetic anisotropy for field-free emission and polarization control

S. M. Hewett et al.

Summary: This study explores the terahertz emission from CoFeB/Pt spintronic structures and reveals an orientation dependence in the emission. By maximizing the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy during the film deposition process and aligning the applied magnetic field with the easy axis, the terahertz emission can reach saturation under weaker fields. The development of spintronic structures that can emit broadband terahertz pulses without the need for an applied magnetic field is significant for terahertz magneto-optical spectroscopy and large-area spintronic emitters.

Significant and Nonmonotonic Dynamic Magnetic Damping in Asymmetric Co-Fe/Ru/Co-Fe Trilayers

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The static and dynamic magnetic properties of Co-Fe/Ru/Co-Fe asymmetric trilayers have been systematically investigated. The interlayer exchange coupling strengths of different terms show weak nonmonotonic behavior with the thickness of the Ru layer. The dynamic IEC effect is found to be dominated by the static IEC, and a theoretical formula is proposed to describe their correlation.

Cascaded Amplification and Manipulation of Terahertz Emission by Flexible Spintronic Heterostructures

Zuanming Jin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient and practical approach to enhance and manipulate THz generation based on a cascaded Pt/CoFe/Ta trilayer fabricated on a flexible PET substrate. The cascaded design enables all THz emission from each PET/STE propagating almost in-phase and yields a 1.55 times amplification compared to a single PET/STE. Two proof-of-concept demonstrations highlight the potential of flexible PET/STE for building blocks of advanced functionalities.

Summary: This study investigated ultrafast spin-to-charge-current conversion in F|N bilayers using terahertz emission spectroscopy. It found that varying the structure of the F/N interface can significantly impact the amplitude and polarity of the charge current, with a dominant interface contribution observed in materials with small spin Hall angle. The results suggest the potential of skew scattering for enhancing interfacial spin-to-charge conversion.

Increasing the Efficiency of a Spintronic THz Emitter Based on WSe2/FeCo

Dinar Khusyainov et al.

Summary: The study found an increase in terahertz radiation efficiency due to FeCo/WSe2 structures in the reflection geometry, attributed to an absorption increase in the alloy FeCo layer at the interface and the backward transport of hot carriers from FeCo to WSe2. Unlike the transmission geometry, the THz generation efficiency in the reflection is much less dependent on the magnetic layer thickness.

Strain-induced Anisotropic Terahertz Emission From a Fe(211)/Pt(110) Bilayer

C. Q. Liu et al.

Summary: The intensity of THz emission in a Fe(211)/Pt(110) bilayer on MgO(110) strongly depends on the magnetization orientation, with a 11% larger THz field measured for M||Pt[11?0] compared to M||Pt[001]. Through first-principles calculations and a superdiffusive spin-transport model, it was revealed that the lattice distortion from epitaxial strain causes anisotropic behavior in electronic conductance and spin Hall conductivity, leading to the observed experimental differences. This study provides insights into modifying THz emission by utilizing intrinsic crystal-structure degrees of freedom.
