Ventilation of the Southern Ocean Pycnocline

Adele K. Morrison et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the complex mechanisms and pathways of Southern Ocean ventilation, as well as its importance in the uptake of anthropogenic heat and carbon. The study concludes that Southern Ocean ventilation depends on multiple processes and that simplified frameworks that explain ventilation changes through a single process are insufficient.

Constraining Southern Ocean CO2 Flux Uncertainty Using Uncrewed Surface Vehicle Observations

A. J. Sutton et al.

Summary: This study utilized an Uncrewed Surface Vehicle to make direct measurements of air-sea CO2, wind speed, and surface ocean properties, providing hourly CO2 flux estimates during the first autonomous circumnavigation of Antarctica in 2019. The research found that different wind speed products and sampling frequencies had the largest impact on CO2 flux estimates, with biases ranging from -4% to +20%. These biases, along with poorly constrained interannual variability, could explain discrepancies between different approaches to estimating Southern Ocean CO2 uptake.

Preformed Properties for Marine Organic Matter and Carbonate Mineral Cycling Quantification

B. R. Carter et al.

Summary: The study estimates preformed ocean properties by combining ventilation pathways reconstruction with submixed layer property estimates. Analysis of net property accumulations indicates net remineralization ratios in the ocean interior and suggests that the interior ocean stores a substantial amount of carbon through organic matter remineralization and carbonate mineral dissolution. The study also highlights the potential for overestimation of interior ocean oxygen consumption and the limited presence of excess alkalinity in seawater supersaturated with calcium carbonate minerals.

Strong Southern Ocean carbon uptake evident in airborne observations

Matthew C. Long et al.

Summary: The Southern Ocean plays a crucial role in determining atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. This study found that the annual mean carbon uptake south of 45 degrees S is -0.53 +/- 0.23 petagrams per year, which is higher than some recent interpretations of profiling float observations.

Delayed-Mode Quality Control of Oxygen, Nitrate, and pH Data on SOCCOM Biogeochemical Profiling Floats

Tanya L. Maurer et al.

Summary: The SOCCOM project has deployed 194 profiling floats equipped with biogeochemical sensors, and post-deployment quality control for float-based oxygen, nitrate, and pH data is essential. In situ calibration of chemical sensors using atmospheric reanalysis and empirical algorithms can improve accuracy. A methodology and software have been developed to visualize float data, assess QC adjustments, and support a growing number of BGC floats globally, demonstrating successful post-deployment calibration and QC of over 250 floats.
