Controlling Factors of Microplastic Riverine Flux and Implications for Reliable Monitoring Strategy

Mengyu Bai et al.

Summary: A significant portion of marine plastic debris and microplastics is believed to come from river systems. Accurate quantification of land-based plastics and microplastics in riverine flux is crucial for effective management of plastic pollution in the marine environment. Rivers serve as important pathways to the ocean and play key roles in supporting various life processes and ecosystem services.

Polyester Microplastic Mitigated NH3 Volatilization from a Rice- Wheat Rotation System: Does Particle Size or Natural Aging Effect Matter?

Lanfang Han et al.

Summary: The accumulation of microplastics in agricultural soils has been found to have negative effects on soil ecosystem functions, specifically in the volatilization of ammonia (NH3). This study focused on the response mechanism of NH3 volatilization to the occurrence of different sizes of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics and the role of natural aging. Results showed that both PET10 and PET200 reduced NH3 volatilization in the rice-wheat rotation cycle soil system. PET200 exhibited a more significant reduction in NH3 volatilization and was related to its higher adsorption capacity for NH4+-N and the formation of microaggregates.

Environmental Degradation of Microplastics: How to Measure Fragmentation Rates to Secondary Micro- and Nanoplastic Fragments and Dissociation into Dissolved Organics

Patrizia Pfohl et al.

Summary: Understanding the environmental fate of microplastics is crucial for risk assessment. A new method was developed to assess and quantify the release of micro- and nanoplastic fragments in different size ranges. The results revealed that dissolved organics are a major source of microplastic mass loss and that previously formed micro- and nanoplastic fragments can further degrade into water-soluble organics.

Potential Artifacts and Control Experiments in Toxicity Tests of Nanoplastic and Microplastic Particles

Elijah. J. Petersen et al.

Summary: Accurate measurements are crucial for fully understanding the potential risks of nanoplastics and microplastics (NMPs) to the environment and human health. This paper comprehensively reviews and suggests a next generation of control experiments to identify measurement artifacts and biases that may occur during NMP toxicity experiments. Incorporating these control experiments can reduce false positive and false negative results and provide a more accurate assessment of the potential risks of NMPs to both ecology and human health.

Microplastics in the Danube River Basin: A First Comprehensive Screening with a Harmonized Analytical Approach

Maria Kittner et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive microplastic screening was conducted in a large European river basin, covering the water column from source to estuary. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with polyethylene being the predominant polymer. The chosen approach of integrative sampling and determination of total plastic content was proven to be successful.

Nanoplastic Transport in Soil via Bioturbation by Lumbricus terrestris

Wiebke Mareile Heinze et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is increasingly considered a new threat to terrestrial environments, yet there is limited understanding of the spatial and temporal dimensions of plastic exposure in soils. Research shows that deep-burrowing earthworms are able to transport nanoplastics vertically in soils and accumulate them in burrow walls. Further investigation is needed to consider the role of bioturbation in nanoplastic fate modeling and the issue of nanoplastic re-entrainment.
