State-of-the-art in bioresources for sustainable transportation

Jaya Verma et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of achieving circularity in the transportation sector through the adoption of sustainable bio-energy resources, particularly biofuels. The paper presents an overview of different biofuels production pathways, current global production and consumption, and highlights the potential of algae-derived biofuels. It also discusses the technical and commercial aspects of biofuels, comparing them with existing battery technology in terms of vehicle weight, storage capacity, cost, and environmental impact. Furthermore, the advancement and challenges of biofuel cells in the automotive sector are explored, along with the development of a new e-biofuel cell system infrastructure to enhance their sustainability.

A review on the current status and post-pandemic prospects of third-generation biofuels

Azra Maliha et al.

Summary: With the rapid increase in fossil fuel depletion, environmental degradations, and industrialization, there is a growing need for sustainable fuel alternatives. Third-generation biofuels, particularly those produced from microalgae, have attracted interest due to their non-competition with food and land supplies. However, the global share of these biofuels has been inadequate, especially due to the ongoing global pandemic. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art study of third-generation biofuel production from microalgae, highlighting the need for further attention and strategies to achieve large-scale production.

MgAl-layered double hydroxides catalyzed hydrothermal liquefaction of tigernut for bio-oil production

Menghan Shi et al.

Summary: Tigernut, a tuber grown in non-arable land of Xinjiang, China, is a potential feedstock for biofuel production due to its high lipid content and low water and land requirements. Previous studies have mainly focused on transesterification for biodiesel production, limiting the bio-oil yield. This study examines the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of tigernut biomass using MgAl-layered double hydroxides as catalysts. The results show that increasing reaction temperature and optimizing Mg/Al ratio enhance both bio-oil yield and deoxygenation. MgAl-LDHx catalysts show promise for the decomposition of tigernut and hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil, providing a potential strategy for bio-oil production.

A Novel Microwave Hot Pressing Machine for Production of Fixed Oils from Different Biopolymeric Structured Tissues

Sherif S. Hindi et al.

Summary: In this study, a microwave hot pressing machine was used to extract fixed oils from different seeds and compared with an ordinary electric hot pressing machine. The results showed that the microwave machine had higher extraction yield and did not cause significant changes in the physical and chemical properties of the oils. This indicates the great potential of microwave hot pressing machines in the industrial extraction of fixed oils.

Transesterification of Pyrolysed Castor Seed Oil in the Presence of CaCu(OCH3)2 Catalyst

Vikas Sharma et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the yields and properties of biodiesel produced from castor seed oil by using a two-stage conversion technique with a modified catalyst prepared from waste eggshell. The results show that the modified process leads to a higher cetane number and oxidation stability, lower viscosity and density, and comparable calorific values compared to traditional transesterification methods.
