Photoinduced multistage phase transitions in Ta2NiSe5

Q. M. Liu et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a unique photoinduced multistage phase transition process in Ta2NiSe5, including a short-lived state and a stable new state, with the latter exhibiting a drastic drop in resistivity by more than four orders of magnitude at 50K with a distinct lattice structure. Additionally, nano-sheet samples with a thickness less than the optical penetration depth are required for achieving complete transition.

Hybridization-Gap Formation and Superconductivity in the Pressure-Induced Semimetallic Phase of the Excitonic Insulator Ta2NiSe5

Kazuyuki Matsubayashi et al.

Summary: The excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5 undergoes a first-order structural transition under pressure, leading to changes from a ripple to flat layer structure and ultimately changing the material from an almost zero-gap semiconductor to a semimetal with partial bandgap. This transition is accompanied by monoclinic distortion and is influenced by electron-lattice coupling. Superconductivity emerges around a certain pressure range, likely mediated by electron-coupled soft phonons.

Photoinduced phase transition and associated timescales in the excitonic insulator Ta2NiSe5

Tanusree Saha et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonequilibrium electronic structure and timescales in Ta2NiSe5 were investigated using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The band gap transiently closes within 100 fs after strong photoexcitation, and the rise time of photoemission intensity above the Fermi energy decreases with increasing excitation strength. The experimental observations support an excitonic origin of the band gap in the material.
