Spherical indentation of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN): Contact damage evolution with increasing load and microstructural effects

S. Gordon et al.

Summary: The severe conditions of hard machining operations require tools with exceptional mechanical properties. This study investigates the damage scenario of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) through controlled damage induction. The results show that higher-grade PcBN exhibits higher resistance to crack nucleation and a more gradual transition between damage scenarios, which can be attributed to the higher hardness and fracture toughness of that grade. The different crack paths and toughness mechanisms observed in the PcBN grades contribute to their effective crack growth resistance. Higher fracture toughness is observed in the grade with a higher content of cBN particles, while the grade with a lower amount of superhard particles shows lower crack growth resistance. These differences in crack resistance are key in understanding enhanced contact damage behavior.

Micromechanical mapping of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride composites by means of high-speed nanoindentation: Assessment of microstructural assemblage effects

S. Gordon et al.

Summary: High-speed nanoindentation is used to evaluate the micromechanical properties of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride and correlate them with the microstructure for performance optimization. The obtained mechanical maps and data sets are statistically treated using 1D and 2D Gaussian fitting. The technique is reliable for assessing intrinsic mechanical properties and mirroring microstructural assemblage, although challenges and disparities exist for fine-grained microstructures.

Contact fatigue of WC-6%wtCo cemented carbides: Influence of corrosion-induced changes on emergence and evolution of damage

Y. F. Zheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of corrosion on the contact fatigue response and associated damage in a medium-grained WC-6%wtCo hardmetal grade. Corrosion is found to significantly impact the material's contact fatigue behavior, leading to gradual and diffuse damage evolution under corroded conditions. These findings are rationalized based on phase changes linked to corrosion, highlighting the impact on toughening capability and WC grain pull-out ease.

Design of cycle structure on microstructure, mechanical properties and tribology behavior of AlCrN/AlCrSiN coatings

Ying Gao et al.

Summary: AlCrN/AlCrSiN coatings with cycle structure, composed of fcc-CrN, hcp-AlN and amorphous Si3N4 phases, were fabricated using high energy ion source enhanced multi-arc ion plating technology. The crystal grains of the coatings were refined and the growth behavior transformed with increasing cycle structure. The coating with two cycle structure exhibited better adhesion strength, higher hardness, better fracture toughness, lower friction coefficient, less wear rate, and longer service life.

Influence of microstructural assemblage of the substrate on the adhesion strength of coated PcBN grades

S. Gordon et al.

Summary: Research on the mechanical integrity of coated polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) tools is limited. This study investigates the adhesion strength of two TiN/TiAlN-coated PcBN substrates with different microstructures. Results show that the damage scenario evolves from adhesive delamination to radial cracking and spalling. The high cBN-content grade exhibits higher resistance to radial cracking and delamination.

Investigation on plastic deformation of arc-evaporated AlCrSiN and AlCrSiON nanocomposite films by indentation

Zhengtao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the plastic deformation of arc-evaporated AlCrSiN and AlCrSiON nanocomposite films deposited on cemented-carbide substrates using nanoindentation. The results showed that both films exhibited excellent plasticity without microcrack initiation and propagation. The AlCrSiON film displayed a prominent pile-up phenomenon, while incorporating oxygen into the AlCrSiN film reduced its hardness and toughness, resulting in pile-up as well.

Summary: The study found that the wear mechanisms of PcBN tooling when machining Ni-based superalloys mainly include diffusional dissolution and oxidation, with tool protection phenomena also observed. Oxidation of Inconel 718 results in the formation of a protective layer on the tool, which helps counterbalance tool wear.

The synergy of V and Si on the microstructure, tribological and oxidation properties of AlCrN based coatings

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic effects of V and Si on the microstructure, tribological and oxidation properties of AlCrN coatings. It is found that the addition of Si can promote the transition from c-Al(Cr)N solid solution to h-Al(Cr)N solid solution, ultimately forming a nanocomposite structure. The Al0.58Cr0.31V0.04Si0.07N coating shows the best resistance to plastic deformation, the lowest wear rate, and high oxidation resistance temperature due to the synergy of V and Si.
