On the links between nature's values and language

Dylan Inglis et al.

Summary: Recent research focuses on understanding human-nature relations by exploring the concept of relational values. However, the influence of language on these values has not been adequately examined. This study investigates the impact of the Basque language ('Euskara') on people's relationships with mountain forests. Results indicate that Euskara plays a key role in cultural identity and place attachment, highlighting the importance of language in relational values. Positive rapports with language can be leveraged for local sustainability transitions, emphasizing the need for further research on the links between biological and linguistic diversity.

A solution for breaking the language barrier

Rassim Khelifa et al.

Summary: Global problems demand global scientific solutions, but the dominance of English presents a significant barrier for non-English-proficient researchers in sharing their findings and knowledge worldwide. To address this, we propose integrating peer language proofing and translation systems into preprint platforms to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in science.

Replacing parachute science with global science in ecology and conservation biology

Alex Asase et al.

Summary: Biodiversity remains relatively unknown and understudied in many developing countries, where scientists face limited access to resources. Collaborations between developing-world scientists and developed-world scientists should be deepened and extended to pose and solve interesting scientific questions.

How to diminish the geographical bias in IPBES and related science?

Andras Baldi et al.

Summary: In order to address the current global environmental crisis, there is a need for operational science-policy interfaces and balanced global participation to support the uptake of IPBES products. Research shows an imbalance in author distribution, particularly in IPBES-related scientific papers. A strategy to increase the number of active member states is proposed to improve IPBES's geographical balance.

Tapping into non-English-language science for the conservation of global biodiversity

Tatsuya Amano et al.

Summary: The assumption that important scientific information is mainly available in English leads to the underuse of non-English language science. However, non-English language studies provide crucial evidence for global biodiversity conservation, expanding the geographical and taxonomic coverage of English language evidence.

Field Environmental Philosophy: A Biocultural Ethic Approach to Education and Ecotourism for Sustainability

Alejandra Tauro et al.

Summary: Field Environmental Philosophy (FEP) is an educational methodology that aims to reconnect citizens and nature by using a systemic approach of biocultural ethic. By combining tourism with experiential education, FEP seeks to reorient ecotourism practices towards biocultural conservation, integrating social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. FEP has the potential to broaden both understanding and practices of environmental education and sustainable tourism by incorporating a philosophical foundation, and its methodology is being adapted in various world regions for integrating education and ecotourism for sustainability.

Culturally diverse expert teams have yet to bring comprehensive linguistic diversity to intergovernmental ecosystem assessments

Abigail J. Lynch et al.

Summary: The goal of multicultural representation in global scientific assessment processes is to enhance legitimacy and inclusiveness through a broader and more diverse knowledge base. However, analysis of IPBES assessments shows a disproportionate reliance on English-language literature and authors from Anglophone countries. To improve linguistic diversity in global ecosystem assessment processes, actionable steps are presented to recognize and incorporate non-English language literature and contributions from non-Anglophones, highlighting the need for broad-scale actions to enhance inclusivity in knowledge synthesis processes.
