The traditional ecological knowledge conundrum

Tibor Hartel et al.

Summary: Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is gaining attention among ecologists as it has the potential to aid in ecosystem management. However, TEK may be preserved not solely due to positive environmental values, but rather as a result of poverty and limited alternatives. We explore this dilemma and propose hypotheses for further investigation.

First Survey of the Vascular and Cryptogam Flora on Bulgaria's Ancient Mounds

Iva Apostolova et al.

Summary: This study represents the first research on the floristic diversity of ancient mounds in Bulgaria, demonstrating the importance of these mounds for the preservation of native plants. Despite their small size, the mounds were found to harbor a significant proportion of the Bulgarian flora, including critically endangered and Balkan endemic species. The high local habitat diversity and the presence of native grassland species suggest that the mounds are valuable for conservation.

Steppe islands in a sea of fields: Where island biogeography meets the reality of a severely transformed landscape

Iwona Dembicz et al.

Summary: The study found that for specialist species, the steppe islands closely follow the theory of island biogeography, but less so for generalist species. Connectivity measures are more important for specialist species richness than for generalist species, which are more influenced by the kurgan's surroundings.
