Hydrophilic carbon nanotube membrane enhanced interfacial evaporation for desalination

Yaqi Hou et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube-based (CNT-based) interfacial evaporation material is a promising material for solar desalination. Molecular dynamic simulations were used to study the evaporation rate of CNT-based membranes with different hydrophilic and hydrophobic chemical modified surfaces. The hydrogen bonding density among water molecules at the interface was found to be a key factor in enhancing the evaporation rate. For hydrophilic CNT-based membranes, strong interactions between the outer surface of the membrane and water molecules can disrupt the water-water hydrogen bonding interactions at the interface, resulting in a reduction of the hydrogen bonding density and an enhancement effect in evaporation rate. There is also an optimal thickness for the evaporation membrane.

More from less: improving solar steam generation by selectively removing a portion of evaporation surface

Ting Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that the evaporation rate decreases as the size of the evaporation surface increases. By selectively removing the middle portion of the evaporation surface, the convection above the entire surface can be reconfigured and enhanced, resulting in an increased evaporation rate and vapor output.

Alternative photothermal/electrothermal hierarchical membrane for hypersaline water treatment

Miao Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a versatile interfacial heating membrane that can be used for treating large quantities of hypersaline wastewater. The membrane functions as both a separation membrane and an interface heater, quickly evaporating the outermost layer of hypersaline water using electricity or solar energy. The results showed that the membrane has high desalination efficiency and excellent corrosion resistance.

Achieving carbon neutrality enables China to attain its industrial water-use target

Xiaoyu Liu et al.

Summary: By adopting a general equilibrium model, this study reveals that achieving carbon neutrality can help the industrial sector in China meet water-use targets and reduce industrial water use by 24% in 2060. However, inter-provincial industrial relocation may lead to increased water use in certain provinces, reducing the potential for water savings. Therefore, stricter and coordinated policies, as well as technological advancements, are necessary to effectively address climate and water challenges.
