Examining the Impact of the Obama and Trump Candidacies on Right-Wing Domestic Terrorism in the United States: A Time-Series Analysis

Olivia Fortunato et al.

Summary: Recent research indicates a rise in right-wing extremist activity during President Trump's tenure, whereas little is known about the impact of President Obama's presidency on right-wing extremism. This study examines the effects of Obama and Trump's candidacies and elections on the frequency of right-wing extremist attacks in the U.S. using a power-threat framework. The findings suggest that Obama's re-election was associated with a gradual increase in attacks, while Trump's candidacy and election predicted permanent increases in the attacks, most of which were abrupt in nature.
