A Leaky Blood-Brain Barrier to Fibrinogen Contributes to Oxidative Damage in Alzheimer's Disease

James G. McLarnon

Summary: The disruption of the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer's disease leads to the extravasation of plasma protein fibrinogen into the brain, causing immune reactivity and inflammation. Abnormal aggregation of fibrinogen, interaction with immune cells, and the production of neurotoxic reactive oxygen species contribute to neuronal and synaptic damage in AD.

Reconsidering Meat Intake and Human Health: A Review of Current Research

Yunting Xie et al.

Summary: Meat consumption varies widely among individuals, populations, and regions, and may not be the main cause of increasing chronic diseases. Unhealthy dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle have a greater impact. Meat and meat products provide valuable protein and essential nutrients, and are still necessary for human health as long as excessive intake is avoided.

Comparative study on the in vitro digestibility of chicken protein after different modifications

Jiahui Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of tea polyphenols (TPPs) and ultrasound treatment (UDT) on the digestibility of chicken myofibrillar protein (MPN) in an enhanced oxidation system were investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of TPPs and UDT-assisted oxidation significantly reduced the original aggregates of MPN and increased the abundance of peptides derived from the structural proteins of MPNs. Digestion kinetic analysis revealed that the EGCG-treated group exhibited the best digestion level among all the treated groups. Overall, the combination of EGCG oxidation and UDT may be an efficient way to enhance the nutritional value of MPN products.

Glutamate transporters have a chloride channel with two hydrophobic gates

Ichia Chen et al.

Summary: Glutamate is an important excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and its proper control is crucial for normal brain function. Recent research has revealed that glutamate transporters can form an aqueous cavity during the transport cycle, allowing for chloride ion conduction. This discovery provides insight into the mechanism by which these transporters support their dual function.

Neurodegenerative processes accelerated by protein malnutrition and decelerated by essential amino acids in a tauopathy mouse model

Hideaki Sato et al.

Summary: The study suggests that a low-protein diet may accelerate brain atrophy in a neurodegenerative disease model in mice, and this abnormal phenotype can be robustly rescued by administration of seven selected essential amino acids. These essential amino acids can also suppress the up-regulation of inflammation-associated gene expression and progressive brain atrophy.

Whole-blood metabolomics of dementia patients reveal classes of disease-linked metabolites

Takayuki Teruya et al.

Summary: Dementia patients show significant differences in 33 metabolites in whole blood, with seven potential neurotoxins present and other compounds that may decrease brain protection. Several metabolites enriched in red blood cells decrease in dementia patients, including potent antioxidants. Metabolites normally protecting the brain in plasma are diminished in dementia, which may contribute to decreased brain function.

NAD plus supplementation reduces neuroinflammation and cell senescence in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease via cGAS-STING

Yujun Hou et al.

Summary: Research reveals that levels of NAD* decrease, and inflammation increases in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients, while treatment with NR can increase brain NAD* levels, reduce inflammation, and improve cellular senescence. NR treatment is beneficial for neuroinflammation and cellular senescence through a cGAS-STING dependent pathway, inducing mitophagy and improving cognitive function.
