High CO2 adsorption on amine-functionalized improved macro-/mesoporous multimodal pore silica

Huangyu Yan et al.

Summary: In recent years, amine functionalized materials have attracted great interest as prospective solid adsorbents for CO2 capture. However, the amine functionalization of traditional supports can lead to a decrease in the pore volume and specific surface area, affecting the CO2 adsorption-desorption kinetics. In this study, macro-/mesoporous multimodal pore silica was synthesized using a ternary nonionic surfactant as a template and impregnated with TEPA to overcome this issue. The resultant HMS-4h support exhibited bimodal pores, high surface area and large pore volume, leading to improved dispersibility of TEPA and reduced diffusion resistance of CO2. The highest adsorption capacity reached 6.04 mmol/g and remained steady after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. The research provides valuable insights for the design of high-performance solid amine CO2 adsorbents in the future.

Fate, bioaccumulation and toxicity of engineered nanomaterials in plants: Current challenges and future prospects

M. Murali et al.

Summary: The main focus of this review is to discuss the phytotoxicity caused by nano-metallic materials on living organisms and the challenges in crops. The usage of nanomaterials in agriculture has the potential to increase sustainable food production, but the large-scale production and release of these materials pose a threat to the environment. The interactions between nanomaterials and plants can have stimulatory or inhibitory effects depending on their composition, size, concentration, and plant species. However, there is still a lack of understanding in terms of their uptake, translocation, and bioaccumulation in plants.

Nanoarchitectured prototypes of mesoporous silica nanoparticles for innovative biomedical applications

Ranjith Kumar Kankala et al.

Summary: Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have great potential in biomedical applications, but traditional MSNs have limitations such as reduced drug encapsulation efficacy and poor degradability. Hierarchically-engineered MSNs have been developed by tuning the pore sizes, modifying the surfaces, and engineering the siliceous networks. These engineered MSNs have complex structures and can be applied in drug delivery, bioimaging, tissue engineering, and other fields.

Influence of ammonia treatment on the CO2 adsorption of activated carbon

Yuuki Mochizuki et al.

Summary: The objectives of this study were to prepare an adsorbent with high-CO2 adsorption performance and to investigate the effect of N-doping on the CO2 adsorption performance of activated carbon. The study found that NH3 treatment at temperatures below 400℃ improved the CO2 adsorption performance of NH3-AC, while treatment at temperatures above 500℃ resulted in a decrease in CO2 adsorption performance due to the reduction in micropores. Chemical and pore property analyses revealed that the introduction of pyridinic-N during NH3 treatment created basic sites, leading to the improvement in CO2 adsorption performance.
