Chitosan-based beads as sustainable adsorbents for wastewater remediation: a review

Akash Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: Water contamination is a growing global issue, and current methods for water and wastewater treatment are limited, especially in terms of difficult regeneration of fossil-fuel derived nano-adsorbents. Advanced methods using sustainable materials like chitosan are needed. Chitosan, a biopolymer extracted from shellfish, is non-toxic, abundant, and chemically stable. It can be shaped into various forms for wastewater treatment. In this review, we focus on chitosan-based beads and their applications in wastewater treatment, including adsorption mechanisms, pollutant removal, functionalization, and regeneration. Notably, chitosan/Fe-hydroxyapatite beads have high adsorption capacity for lead removal, while imprinted magnetic chitosan beads show good reusability for nickel removal.

Cynometra cauliflora essential oils loaded-chitosan nanoparticles: Evaluations of their antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities

Benedict Anak Samling et al.

Summary: In this study, nanoencapsulation of Cynometra cauliflora essential oils (CCEOs) in chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) was successfully achieved using an emulsion-ionic gelation technique. The resulting CCEOs-CSNPs exhibited well dispersion and spherical shape with an average size of less than 100 nm. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity were high, indicating successful nanoencapsulation. The CCEOs-CSNPs showed significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, as well as cytotoxic effects against breast cancer cells while being non-toxic to normal cells. These findings suggest that nanoencapsulation using CSNPs could enhance the properties of CCEOs in biomedical applications.

Adsorption of tetracycline using CuCoFe2O4@Chitosan as a new and green magnetic nanohybrid adsorbent from aqueous solutions: Isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic study

Alireza Nasiri et al.

Summary: A powerful and magnetically separable nano-adsorbent CuCoFe2O4@Chitosan was successfully synthesized using a new microwave-assisted method. The magnetic nanohybrid adsorbent was characterized and its adsorption process for Tetracycline (TC) was investigated. The results showed that the TC adsorption process on the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite followed the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic. Thermodynamic analyses revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous, favorable, and exothermic. The nano-adsorbent exhibited good magnetic properties for easy separation and maintained high removal efficiency after multiple adsorption-desorption cycles.

Highly Efficient Adsorption of Tetracycline Using Chitosan-Based Magnetic Adsorbent

Franciele da Silva Bruckmann et al.

Summary: This study reports on the adsorption of tetracycline using magnetic chitosan as the adsorbent. The highest adsorption capacity was achieved at pH 7.0, and the efficiency of the adsorbent depended on pH, initial concentration, and dosage. Ionic strength significantly affected the process. The Sips and Elovich models provided the best fit for the experimental data, indicating heterogeneous surface adsorption predominantly through chemical mechanisms. The adsorption of tetracycline was governed by hydrogen bonds and cation-pi interactions, and the incorporation of magnetite on the chitosan surface enhanced its removal efficiency. Thermodynamic parameters suggested a spontaneous and exothermic process. Magnetic chitosan proved to be effective in tetracycline removal even after multiple adsorption/desorption cycles.

Chitosan modifications for adsorption of pollutants-A review

Ismaila Olalekan Saheed et al.

Summary: Modification of chitosan through methods such as grafting and cross-linking is a promising approach for removing organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous medium. The performance of modified chitosan for adsorption of pollutants depends largely on the modification method adopted, materials used, and adsorption experimental conditions. Cross-linking is commonly used for improving the stability of chitosan, although it may decrease adsorption capacity, but recent works have shown enhancement through grafting or incorporation of solid adsorbents before cross-linking.
