Reduced mortality during the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan, 2020: a two-stage interrupted time-series design

Daisuke Onozuka et al.

Summary: The overall all-cause mortality in Japan during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 decreased compared to historical baseline, with reduced deaths observed for both sexes and all age groups except those aged. Further evaluation of cause-specific excess mortality is needed.

Estimating excess mortality due to the COVID-19 pandemic: a systematic analysis of COVID-19-related mortality, 2020-21

Haidong Wang et al.

Summary: This study estimated excess mortality from the COVID-19 pandemic in 191 countries and territories, as well as 252 subnational units in selected countries from Jan 1, 2020, to Dec 31, 2021. The findings showed that globally, there were 18.2 million excess deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic during this period. The highest excess mortality rates were observed in countries such as India, the USA, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Associations Between Adherence to Evidence-Based, Stroke Quality Indicators and Outcomes of Acute Reperfusion Therapy

Nice Ren et al.

Summary: This study examined adherence to QIs in patients with acute ischemic stroke in Japan, showing a significant and sustainable improvement in adherence rates for key measures from 2013 to 2017. Adherence to key QIs affected in-hospital outcomes, highlighting the importance of monitoring quality of care using evidence-based QIs.

Future projection of the health and functional status of older people in Japan: A multistate transition microsimulation model with repeated cross-sectional data

Megumi Kasajima et al.

Summary: A new method is proposed to estimate the multistate-transition contingency tables for the Japanese population using repeated cross-sectional representative surveys, providing future projections of health status. By calculating the prevalence of comorbidities in different age groups and determining transition probabilities based on death record information, the study successfully projected disease distributions. Results show lower prevalence of cardiovascular diseases than expected, reflecting declining trends in disease incidence and fatality in recent years.

Bending the Curve in Cardiovascular Disease Mortality Bethesda+40 and Beyond

David Calvin Goff et al.

Summary: More than 40 years after the 1978 Bethesda Conference on the Declining Mortality from Coronary Heart Disease provided a blueprint for understanding declining rates of coronary heart disease, recent data suggests that the decline may have ended or even reversed. While mortality rates for overall cardiovascular disease are decelerating, those for heart failure are increasing. The symposium discussed trends in cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes epidemics, as well as opportunities for promoting cardiovascular health and preventing disease.

LDL-C Levels Below 55 mg/dl and Risk of Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Meta-Analysis

Walter Masson et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that using more intensive lipid-lowering therapy to achieve LDL-C levels lower than 55 mg/dl in patients at high cardiovascular risk is not associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke. The results suggest that challenging lipid goals recommended by new guidelines are consistent with observed cardiovascular benefits and safety of achieving very low LDL-C values.
