Evolving Cost-Quality Relationship in Pediatric Heart Surgery

Sara K. Pasquali et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between hospital quality, costs, and clinical outcomes for children undergoing congenital heart surgery in the United States. Hospital costs vary across hospitals, but were not significantly associated with most quality metrics examined, except for postoperative length of stay (PLOS) and high-risk cases. The findings suggest that cost variability may be influenced by care processes related to PLOS and high-risk cases, providing potential targets for value-based initiatives in this population.

Summary: The World Database for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WDPCHS), sponsored by the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WSPCHS), provides complex programmatic outcomes analyses. The report analyzed procedures submitted from 2017 to 2020, showing lower mortality rates in cases submitted by Asian countries. WSPCHS achieved its mission by creating a platform for global exchange.

Inpatient admissions and costs for adolescents and young adults with congenital heart defects in New York, 2009-2013

Wan-Hsiang Hsu et al.

Summary: Most individuals born with congenital heart defects survive to adulthood, but healthcare utilization patterns for adolescents and adults with CHDs have not been well described. In New York State, there were 5,100 unique individuals with >= 1 CHD diagnosis codes recorded during inpatient admissions between 2009-2013. The median inpatient cost was $10,720 and the average length of stay was 3.0 days per admission; 55.1% were emergency admissions. Admission volume increased by 48.7% from 2009 to 2013, while total inpatient costs increased by 91.8% over the same period.

Improving Longitudinal Outcomes, Efficiency, and Equity in the Care of Patients With Congenital Heart Disease

Brett R. Anderson et al.

Summary: This study aimed to link clinical data of congenital heart patients in New York with Medicaid claims data to establish a mechanism for longitudinal assessment of outcomes, expenditures, and health inequities. Results showed that the majority of children could be tracked over 3 to 10 years when matching Medicaid claims data.

The Current Landscape of Congenital Heart Surgery in Northern China: A Geographic and Population-Based Analysis

Zhanhao Su et al.

Summary: Many CHS facilities in northern China have limited specialist capacity, leading to suboptimal surgical care for many CHD patients, while a minority of busy facilities have higher surgical volumes. Policy measures need to be implemented to address the issues of insufficient medical resources and geographic disparities.

Socioeconomic inequality in congenital heart diseases in Iran

Mostafa Amini-Rarani et al.

Summary: This study found significant pro-rich inequality in Congenital Heart Diseases (CHDs) in Iran, primarily explained by social and medical/biological variables. The distributional policies aimed at reducing income inequality and increasing access to prenatal care and folic acid for disadvantaged mothers could more effectively address this inequality.
