Exfoliated graphene and its derivatives from liquid phase and their role in performance enhancement of epoxy matrix composite

Pratiksha M. Biranje et al.

Summary: This review paper focuses on liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) of graphene and its derivatives, including electrochemical exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, and chemical exfoliation. A comprehensive analysis of literature data on these processes provides insights into the factors that control the rate of LPE. The mechanisms for each exfoliation process are discussed, and a scale-up methodology is proposed based on these findings. The synthesis of reduced GO (rGO) through thermal and chemical routes is also discussed, along with the applications of functionalized graphene and GO in polymer matrix composites. The review explains how the bonding between epoxy groups and functional groups on graphene affects the strength and permeation properties of epoxy composites. The advantages of graphene modifications are discussed in detail to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms for industrial development. Finally, a future roadmap is proposed based on identified knowledge gaps.

Cryogenic mechanical properties of graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites: Influence of graphene oxide with different oxidation degrees

Jie Fan et al.

Summary: The study showed that as the oxidation degree of graphene oxide increased, it exhibited better dispersion in the matrix and improved interfacial interactions with epoxy resin, leading to enhanced mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The tensile properties of the GO/epoxy nanocomposites at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature increased with the GO oxidation degree, reaching the highest performance at an appropriate oxidation degree. The toughening mechanisms of GO for epoxy nanocomposites at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature were analyzed and showed significant differences.
