Indigenous governance structures for maintaining an ecosystem service in an agro-pastoral community in the Indian Trans Himalaya

Summary: The majority of global terrestrial biodiversity is found on indigenous lands, and the decline of biodiversity on these lands is relatively slower. However, there is a lack of understanding about indigenous systems for the governance of biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study focuses on an indigenous community in the Trans-Himalayan Mountains of India and finds that the community has a well-functioning, relatively democratic, and inclusive governance system for ecosystem services. The study highlights the importance and resilience of indigenous systems in governing ecosystem services.

Engaging women brings conservation benefits to snow leopard landscapes

While evidence of successful engagement of women in large carnivore conservation is limited, a program in Spiti Valley, India, aimed to involve women in local conservation action and has shown positive results. Monitoring over 7 years revealed increasing interest and participation from women, and they reported multiple benefits from the program.

The study highlights that resilient relationships built through respectful engagement and negotiation with local communities can serve as a strong foundation for effective conflict management. Additionally, the heuristic value of documenting practitioner experiences in on-the-ground conflict management and community-based conservation efforts is emphasized.
