Recommendations and Strategies to Mitigate Environmental Implications of Artificial Island Developments in the Gulf

Muhammad Salman Afzal et al.

Summary: Artificial island development is a solution to urbanization, but it poses significant risks to marine biodiversity. This study critically reviews the construction activities of artificial islands in the Gulf region and identifies gaps in biodiversity and ecology. The study suggests strict compliance with legislation, research and data collection, and stronger environmental assessments to protect marine ecosystems.

Energy modeling and photovoltaics integration as a mitigation measure for climate change impacts on energy demand

Dana I. Al Huneidi et al.

Summary: Due to Qatar's increasing population and electricity consumption worldwide, measures to reduce the carbon footprint associated with growing energy demand are being taken by several countries. The research focuses on applying demand-side management to residential villas in order to reduce their energy consumption and environmental impact. The integration of photovoltaics on villa rooftops is found to be an economically and environmentally attractive solution.

Past local industrial disasters and involvement of NGOs stimulate public participation in transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment

Athanasios Alexandru Gavrilidis et al.

Summary: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a regulatory procedure implemented worldwide to evaluate the environmental impact of economic activities. This study analyzes the media coverage of four major projects subject to the EIA procedure in Romania and finds that media only focuses on projects' environmental impact when NGOs play important roles in the process or when the projects have negative backgrounds.

A review of the quality of environmental impact statements with a focus on urban projects from Romania

Andreea Nita et al.

Summary: In developing countries like Romania, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) faces difficulties in achieving its goals due to the influence of political, social, and economic interests, as well as institutional and policy contexts. A study evaluating the quality of environmental impact statements (EISs) in seven urban areas of Romania found that the reports lacked clear information on the range of impacts studied, alternatives, and mitigation measures. However, the description of the project and environmental factors had higher quality. The study identifies weaknesses in EISs and suggests ways to enhance their quality and promote sustainable policy decisions.
