Inflammation and nitro-oxidative stress in current suicidal attempts and current suicidal ideation: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Asara Vasupanrajit et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a significant association between activated immune-inflammatory and nitro-oxidative pathways and suicide attempts. Inflammation, immune activation, nitro-oxidative stress, lowered neuroprotection, and increased neurotoxicity may explain why psychiatric patients exhibit increased suicidal behaviors.

The tryptophan catabolite or kynurenine pathway in schizophrenia: meta-analysis reveals dissociations between central, serum, and plasma compartments

Abbas F. Almulla et al.

Summary: The tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway is involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia through the activation of the enzyme indoleamine-dioxygenase (IDO) by inflammatory and oxidative stress mediators. This systematic review examined the association between TRYCATs in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral blood in schizophrenia patients. The findings showed significant differences in TRYCAT levels between the CNS and peripheral blood, with only a modest increase in serum IDO activity associated with CNS findings.

Peripheral levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β across the mood spectrum in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of mean differences and variability

Marco Solmi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare inflammatory mediators in bipolar disorder (BD) with healthy controls, finding that CRP and TNF-alpha may be state markers as they were only elevated during mood episodes, while IL-6 appeared to be a trait marker for BD. The variability of specific inflammatory mediators in specific disease active states suggests that some BD subjects may exhibit elevated inflammation during manic or depressive episodes.

Summary: The study conducted a meta-analysis and found that tryptophan and kynurenine concentrations are reduced in patients with MDD, BD, and SZ, while kynurenic acid and the kynurenic acid to quinolinic acid ratio are decreased in mood disorders (i.e., MDD and BD).

Dysregulation of kynurenine pathway and potential dynamic changes of kynurenine in schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Bing Cao et al.

Summary: The study explored the association between key metabolites of the KYN pathway and schizophrenia, revealing that subjects with prescribed medication had higher KYN levels, higher KYN levels in CSF, lower plasma KYN levels, and higher CSF KYNA levels were associated with SCZ, and KYN levels increased in subjects with SCZ after antipsychotic treatments.

The trajectory of putative astroglial dysfunction in first episode schizophrenia: a longitudinal 7-Tesla MRS study

Peter Jeon et al.

Summary: Research using 7T magnetic resonance spectroscopy found a significant reduction in myo-inositol concentration in the ACC of untreated early-stage schizophrenia patients, which became insignificant over time with early intervention. This trajectory suggests dynamic astroglial changes in the early stages of schizophrenia, with MRS myo-inositol potentially serving as a critical marker for symptom improvement in early schizophrenia stages.

Summary: The TRYCAT pathway is downregulated in BD patients, with lower levels of TRP and KYN in peripheral blood compared to healthy controls, while no difference was found in cerebrospinal fluid. The quality of the studies was rated as moderate.

Brain Versus Blood: A Systematic Review on the Concordance Between Peripheral and Central Kynurenine Pathway Measures in Psychiatric Disorders

Katrien Skorobogatov et al.

Summary: This study found moderate to strong concordance between peripheral and central concentrations of kynurenine and 3-hydroxykynurenine, not only in psychiatric disorders, but in other physiological conditions. Despite discordant findings for other metabolites, blood metabolite levels were associated with clinical symptoms and treatment response in psychiatric patients, as well as with observed neuroanatomical abnormalities and glial activity.
