Eric R. Labelle et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines methods and techniques for mitigating soil disturbances caused by ground-based mechanized forest operations. The review finds that factors such as terrain, operational planning, machine modifications, and amendments can all help reduce the negative impacts on soil. The review also provides recommendations and strategies for the use of soil mitigation techniques and identifies new research opportunities.

Continuous cover forestry in Europe: usage and the knowledge gaps and challenges to wider adoption

W. L. Mason et al.

Summary: There is growing interest in adopting continuous cover forestry (CCF) in Europe, but there are significant knowledge gaps and obstacles hindering its widespread use. These obstacles include lack of awareness among forest owners, limited competence in CCF within the forestry profession, and a shortage of skilled forest workers to implement this approach. Better understanding of different silvicultural systems is crucial to monitor progress in diversifying forests and establishing a continental network of long-term operational trials could help improve professional understanding of CCF and support research endeavors.

Evaluating the effects of alternative model structures on dynamic storage simulation in heterogeneous boreal catchments

Shirin Karimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of three different HBV model structures on 14 heterogeneous boreal catchments, showing that the three-bucket structure performs better in larger catchments while a single reservoir structure is sufficient for lake-influenced catchments with lower elevation. Although estimates of mean catchment storage varied between different model structures, the ranking between catchments largely agreed across the different structures.

Drainage Ditch Cleaning Has No Impact on the Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Balances in a Recent Forest Clear-Cut in Boreal Sweden

Cheuk Hei Marcus Tong et al.

Summary: This study conducted chamber measurements to evaluate the initial effects of ditch cleaning on carbon and greenhouse gas fluxes on wet mineral soil in northern Sweden. The results showed that ditch cleaning had limited impact on net CO2 exchange and its component fluxes, but led to increased CH4 emissions during wet years.

Measuring and Modeling the Effect of Strip Cutting on the Water Table in Boreal Drained Peatland Pine Forests

Leena Stenberg et al.

Summary: This study examined the hydrological feasibility of strip-cutting management in drained boreal peatland pine forests. It found that the feasibility increased with increasing site productivity and improving climate conditions. Strip cutting resulted in a rise in water table levels in adjacent unharvested stands, and narrower strips indicated better drainage in the harvested area compared to wider strips. Although strip cutting had limited capacity to maintain efficient drainage on low hydraulic conductivity peat, the increase in water table levels was smaller than after clear-cutting.

The emerging role of drought as a regulator of dissolved organic carbon in boreal landscapes

Tejshree Tiwari et al.

Summary: Global climate change could lead to more frequent and intense droughts in high latitudes. A study using a 17-year record from boreal streams found that summer droughts direct and lag effects on the quantity and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) inputs from catchment soils. The research showed that summer drought causes a fundamental shift in the seasonal distribution of DOC concentrations and character, which play a primary role in the functioning of northern aquatic ecosystems.

Multiple stressors in small streams in the forestry context of Fennoscandia: The effects in time and space

Lenka Kuglerova et al.

Summary: This paper discusses how forest management practices in Sweden and Finland expose streams to multiple stressors over space and time. Various forestry actions disturb aquatic ecosystems in these regions, with stressors accumulating over the rotation cycles and potentially affecting a majority of the stream length. The interactions between different stressors in forestry dominated landscapes are complex and require further investigation for better management practices.

Partial Harvest in Paludified Black Spruce Stand: Short-Term Effects on Water Table and Variation in Stem Diameter

Samuel Roy Proulx et al.

Summary: The boreal forest is considered low productivity due to cold climate and poorly drained soils causing peatlands. Partial harvest may be more effective than clearcutting to mitigate high water table and limit peatification. Temperature has a positive effect on water table and stem diameter variations.

Drainage and Stand Growth Response in Peatland Forests-Description, Testing, and Application of Mechanistic Peatland Simulator SUSI

Ari Lauren et al.

Summary: Drainage is crucial in peatland forest management, and the SUSI simulator accurately predicts water table and stand growth under different conditions. Stand growth is mainly limited by potassium supply and oxygen availability in Sphagnum peats. The model application demonstrates the impact of ditch network maintenance on stand growth under different ditch depths.

Rewetting does not return drained fen peatlands to their old selves

J. Kreyling et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of rewetting drained peatlands in restoring plant communities and ecosystem functions remains unclear, with persistent differences and higher variance observed in restored sites compared to near-natural peatlands. The rewetting of drained fen peatlands results in the establishment of tall wetland plants and long-lasting differences in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and land cover characteristics. Understanding the outcomes of rewetting efforts is crucial for improving planning and implementation of peatland restoration.

How tree species, tree size, and topographical location influenced tree transpiration in northern boreal forests during the historic 2018 drought

Jose Gutierrez Lopez et al.

Summary: Through studying the impact of the 2018 drought on high-latitude boreal forest trees in Sweden, researchers found that pine trees exhibited better transpiration control compared to spruce trees during severe drought periods. They also observed that larger trees experienced less reduction in transpiration during drought, with different responses based on species and elevation. The study emphasizes the importance of considering tree species, size, and topographic position in understanding drought responses in boreal forests.

Overriding water table control on managed peatland greenhouse gas emissions

C. D. Evans et al.

Summary: This study shows that the depth of the water table is the main factor influencing greenhouse gas fluxes in peatlands. By lowering the water table depth by 10 cm, emissions of CO2 and CH4 can be reduced by the equivalent of at least 3 tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year, until the water table depth is less than 30 cm.

Long-Term Nitrogen and Phosphorus Dynamics in Waters Discharging from Forestry-Drained and Undrained Boreal Peatlands

Mika Nieminen et al.

Summary: The study found varying trends in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in waters discharging from drained peatland forests, with nitrogen concentrations positively correlated with temperature sum and tree stand volume, while phosphorus trends were unrelated to explanatory factors. There is concern about the future evolution of nitrogen dynamics under a warming climate. Further research is needed to understand the processes related to tree stand volume and temperature sum that contribute to increasing nitrogen concentrations.

High boreal forest multifunctionality requires continuous cover forestry as a dominant management

Kyle Eyvindson et al.

Summary: The study explores the impact of restricting forest management alternatives on forest multifunctionality. Results show that limiting forest management alternatives negatively affects forest multifunctionality at all harvesting levels, with continuous cover forestry outperforming rotation forestry. The study suggests considering continuous cover forestry as the primary management alternative, with selective application of rotation forestry at the landscape scale.
