Sulfide-driven nitrous oxide recovery during the mixotrophic denitrification process

Cong Yu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel sulfide-driven process to recover N2O during denitrification. Results show that sulfide inhibits the activity of nitrous oxide reductase (N2OR), leading to N2O accumulation. Additionally, sulfide can substitute for organic carbon as an electron donor. The study also reveals that sulfide induces significant changes in the conformation and protein structure of cytochrome c, causing a loss of electron transport capacity.

Wenfang Cai et al.

Summary: A novel electrolytic-hydrogen-fed moving bed biofilm reactor (electroMBBR) for methane production was developed to address the challenge of ensuring high coulombic efficiency under high current density in hydrogen-mediated MES reactors. The reactor achieved a maximum methane production rate of 1.42 L/day at 5 A, demonstrating the potential for scaling up and practical application of this technology. The microbial community analysis revealed Methanobrevibacter as the dominant methane-producing archaea in the reactor.

Summary: A study was conducted on the effect of weak electrical stimulation on biofilms in a bioelectrochemical anammox system. Continuous stimulation was found to enhance the electron transfer system activity and nitrogen removal, while also facilitating the secretion of extracellular polymer substances and promoting the formation of compact biofilms. Microbial analysis showed an increase in specific microorganisms, indicating the importance of weak electrical stimulation in diversifying the microbial community and creating a robust nitrogen metabolic pathway.

Autotrophic nitrate reduction to ammonium via reverse electron transfer in Geobacter dominated biofilm

Yue Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the possibility of reverse bioelectron transfer in Geobacter-dominated electroactive biofilms, achieving a high efficiency of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA). The use of constant current is found to be more effective in maintaining Geobacter on the cathode, and the prevalence of DNRA at constant current is shown through gene transcription analysis. Metatranscriptomics reveals potential electron uptake mechanisms in the biofilms.

Summary: Exoelectrogens play a key role in anaerobic microbial interspecies electron-sharing networks. Nitrate disturbance affects the electron-sharing networks of exoelectrogens, leading to a mutualistic interaction between Geobacter sp. and hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers under nitrate stress. Mediated electron transfer and extracellular polymer substrate contribute to biofilm aggregates formation in response to nitrate disturbance.

Remediation of nitrate contamination by membrane hydrogenotrophic denitrifying biofilm integrated in microbial electrolysis cell

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: Biological denitrification in water lacking electron donors is usually limited, but can be effectively improved by using gas diffusion membrane integrated microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) to generate hydrogen from organic wastes for cost-efficient denitrification. Different materials of MECs achieved high overall nitrogen removal rates of 90%-95% at all applied voltages, with decreasing voltage significantly improving electron utilization efficiency. Integration of MEC with gas diffusion membrane greatly improved total nitrogen removal by 40%, with dominant hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers facilitating nitrogen removal and higher abundance of functional denitrification related genes predicted by PICRUSt2 based on 16S rRNA gene data.

Long-term sulfide input enhances chemoautotrophic denitrification rather than DNRA in freshwater lake sediments

Yunmeng Pang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the addition of sulfide (S2-) enhanced the coupling of denitrification with sulfide oxidation, leading to a shift in nitrate reduction pathways in freshwater lake sediments. The enrichment of Thiobacillus, a sulfide-oxidizing denitrifier, was found to play a key role in driving sulfide-driven denitrification, with differences observed in lakes with varying inherent organic carbon and sulfate levels. Additionally, internal sulfate release was seen to promote cooperation between sulfide-oxidizing denitrifiers and sulfate reducers in freshwater environments.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of electrotrophic communities in paddy soil to different long-term fertilization practices, revealing significant changes in the community structure. The dominant electrotrophs were identified as Streptomyces genus in the CK, M, and MNPK soils, while Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were major electrotrophs in the NPK soil. Furthermore, it was found that electrotrophs enhanced dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) for all soils.
