Prevalence of supratentorial anomalies assessed by magnetic resonance imaging in fetuses with open spina bifida

L. Trigo et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the prevalence of brain anomalies and their relationship with spinal defects in fetuses eligible for prenatal open spina bifida repair. The results showed that more than half of the fetuses had abnormal corpus callosum and/or abnormal ventricular wall before the prenatal repair. Furthermore, non-sacral lesions and wider lateral ventricles were associated with an increased risk of brain abnormalities. Therefore, a detailed preoperative evaluation of the central nervous system is crucial in fetuses with open spina bifida.

New insights in cerebral findings associated with fetal myelomeningocele: a retrospective cohort study in a single tertiary centre

P. Maurice et al.

Summary: The study found that besides Chiari type 2 malformation, other cerebral anomalies are frequently observed in fetuses with myelomeningocele, with the most common being abnormalities of the corpus callosum. Whether these associated cerebral anomalies affect the selection of cases eligible for fetal surgery requires further evaluation.

Prenatal predictors of motor function in children with open spina bifida: a retrospective cohort study

R. Corroenne et al.

Summary: This study found that predictors for intact motor function at birth and at 12 months in babies who underwent prenatal repair of open spina bifida included absence of clubfeet, intact motor function at different ultrasound evaluations, and having a flat lesion. In the postnatal repair group, intact motor function at birth was the only predictor for intact motor function at 12 months.

Cranial findings detected by second-trimester ultrasound in fetuses with myelomeningocele: a systematic review

Y. Kunpalin et al.

Summary: Multiple intracranial abnormalities were detected by second-trimester ultrasound in fetuses with MMC, but the clinical significance of these findings remains unclear and may not necessarily contraindicate fetal surgery. Long-term follow-up is needed to further investigate the impact of these cranial abnormalities on postnatal outcomes.

Fully percutaneous fetoscopic repair of myelomeningocele: 30-month follow-up data

D. Diehl et al.

Summary: This observational study presents the postnatal mortality and 30-month outcomes of children who underwent fully percutaneous fetoscopic repair of myelomeningocele in Germany. The research shows similar results to open repair in terms of mortality, prematurity, shunt-placement rates, motor and mental development, and free ambulation.

Longitudinal evaluation of motor function in patients who underwent prenatal or postnatal neural tube defect repair

R. Corroenne et al.

Summary: This study compared the evolution of motor function among ONTD cases undergoing prenatal and postnatal repair. Postnatally repaired cases demonstrated poorer motor function at birth and at 12 months compared to prenatally repaired cases. Prenatal motor function assessment by ultrasound was effective in predicting postnatal motor function outcomes.

Summary: In fetuses with isolated spina bifida aperta, nearly three-quarters had abnormal corpus callosum (CC), most commonly with partial agenesis in the splenium and rostrum. Larger lateral ventricle size was associated with partial agenesis of the CC.

Percutaneous fetoscopic spina bifida repair: effect on ambulation and need for postnatal cerebrospinal fluid diversion and bladder catheterization

D. A. Lapa et al.

Summary: A trial comparing prenatal with postnatal open spina bifida repair found that prenatal surgery had better postnatal outcomes. A novel neurosurgical technique called SAFER was investigated for its impact on long-term postnatal outcomes. The study showed significant predictors for outcomes such as need for CSF diversion and ambulation, with similar long-term neurological outcomes to traditional surgery methods.
